I never fail to come home from SPA ready to spin spin spin. This is some Shetland roving from miss Susie (the sheep) who is sweet as pie and much less shy after having a lamb last spring. Riley thinks Susie smells delightful!

Berzelius Tunisian Crochet Scarf

My dear crocheters. You have been so kind and so patient, lo these many years, waiting for crochet patterns. And today, your patience will be rewarded for the first time. Today we are releasing our first crochet pattern, created just for you by an amazing crochet designer named Ryan Hollist. (Ryan designs under the name Joe d’Arc Crochet; you can see more of his designs here.)

I met Ryan at a trunk show in Salt Lake City at a really cool yarn shop called Blazing Needles. (Seriously. I was the uncoolest person in this shop by a mile.) Herriot hadn’t even been released yet, but when I saw Ryan’s work, I knew we needed him to design something just for our crocheters using all the colors of Herriot.

Here’s what Ryan has to say about Berzelius:

I started exploring Tunisian crochet over the past year.  I really enjoy it.  The textures and colorwork possibilities very intriguing.  However, I found there seemed to be something of a block to many in the yarn craft community to giving Tunisian crochet a try.  Mainly, people seemed hesitant to make the investment in the long Tunisian/afghan hooks usually necessary for doing Tunisian crochet.  I wanted to provide something to the community that would help people experience Tunisian crochet without making them commit to the investment of another set of tools–that investment could come later, if they wanted.  What came out of my experimentation was the ribbon technique used in the Berzelius scarf.
If anyone is interested in the origin of the name, it’s partly a bit of Google randomness and my recent gravitation to naming designs after famous scientists.  Berzelius is in reference to Jons Jacob Berzelius, one of the fathers of modern chemistry.

I present to you the Tunisian Bias Ribbon Scarf!

Although this is a Tunisian crochet pattern, it is designed to use a standard crochet hook. Between the clear directions in the pattern, and the tutorials provided, you should have no problems if this this your first Tunisian crochet project.

Berzelius can be downloaded as a pdf here, or anytime from the free patterns page. If you’d like to add the pattern to your Ravelry projects or queue, you’ll find it right here.  (You can also leave a comment for Ryan there about how awesome this scarf is!)

For excellent tutorials, check out Kim Guzman’s youtube videos here. Kim is the go-to resource for all things Tunisian Crochet and she tech edited this pattern for us.

Lauria is thinking about having a Crochet-Along hosted on the JMF Ravelry group. Anyone want to join her?

EDITED TO ADD: Here’s the link to the crochet along! We’ll start March 1st!

Getting Strong Check In

1. First, I found this today, and it has nothing to do with anything, but it’s lovely.

2. I went out to lunch with work colleagues and ordered Gluten Free pasta (it was a pasta joint and the only other option was crappy Cesar salad or a gigantic steak.) It was a mistake. I didn’t have a gluten reaction, but it was corn pasta, I think. Definitely not white rice like I expected, and can eat with no real side effects. I kind of feel like I ate an inflated balloon.

3. By tweaking my portions and avoiding sugar, I lost five pounds last week. Plus, I kept up my activity level like I wanted to.

4. I make fewer excuses to not go for a walk my zune is fully loaded with fresh podcasts and audiobooks.

5. There’s a free youtube video of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred out there. She’s a little annoying, but the work out is good.

6. I forgot about my kombucha-in-process for a few days, so now it’s extra strong, which is pretty awesome.

7. I also left my yogurt in the yogotherm for about 30 hours. I possess super-probiotics! (Fermenting has become my new baking.)

8. I am going to Zumba class on Wednesday. I have only been once before, ages ago, but it was a lot of fun, and I would like to make it a regular thing, even if I do look like an idiot.

9. Naps always win. I will never chose exercise over sleep, especially when I slept like crap the night before.

Tulips In February …

A grey day in February brightened by my favorite flower.

Ricochet is finished and I’m really happy with the result. Clearly I need to stock up on this fun stripe fabric for future baby quilts!

I Love Flowers …

My creation

So long, old friend.

My Sweet Buster, who is one of the oldest sheep on the farm, passed away today.

Buster was one of my original flock of five sheep, along with Ernie, Daisy, Capeable and his twin brother Cosmo. Buster was the first of the flock to trust me, to eat animals crackers from my hand and rub his giant head against my legs. This quickly segued into long sessions of rubbing behind his ears. Once the rest of the sheep saw that I had the Buster seal of approval they grew to trust me too.

Buster was my sheep boyfriend. He was a calming, steady presence on the farm and I will miss him every single day.

I am sure that I won’t be the only one who missing him, either. Buster and Cosmo were the best of friends, always to be found grazing side-by-side.

Rest in peace, Buster. You were a good sheep.

A Garden Party Under the Big Top?

People keep asking me about wedding colors, and me, being me, immediately don’t know how to communicate all of the things that go through my head upon bringing up these thoughts. I usually end up saying something lame, “You know, summer wedding in Kansas, so Sunflower, which I guess means yellow?” Finally, someone read my mind and put it all into a neat little graphic on pinterest.

It encompasses the garden party aesthetic I am envisioning closer than anything else I have seen–possibly because it wasn’t originally meant for a wedding. And while it involves sea foam, it is not just yellow and sea foam, which frankly, resembles vomit in my head (I can’t explain why), and for some reason seems to be the thing at the moment–at least according to Pinterest. And if Pinterest doesn’t have the pulse of the nation, I don’t know what does.

The thing is, most people ask about wedding colors, and I get the feeling they mean bridesmaids dresses and cummerbunds. Since we’re going informalish, and having no wedding party, there will be very little of all of that. “The colors” I am thinking about are more to set a mood for the day. That I want things to be a little whimsical, a little romantic, a little self-deprecating, and a lot of fun. For instance, I stumbled across this invitation on etsy, which is a little circusy, but also pretty hilarious. Let’s be honest, the only thing that could make this invitation better was if dude had a monocle. (Bonus, the artist is from Lawrence, so local!)

Then, I found this dress.
weddingdress
Which yes, is from Old Navy, and yes, is white, two things I would not have expected for me to want in a wedding dress, but it’s kind of perfect.

So things seem to be coming together rather nicely at the moment. I am gathering ideas and finding some sources of inspiration. I have a great surprise for wedding favors up my sleeve, but I’m not quite ready to share just yet.
