Tiny Dino Studios 2013-05-02 22:22:09

Yesterday I hinted at some changes I want to make in the near future in my business, but I did not elaborate. And I apologize, I hate it when people are vague and secretive on their blogs. Usually when someone is too vague and too secretive too often I stop reading it and just look at the pictures. If the pictures seem to indicate this person is continuing to pretend they live in the magazine portrayal of their life they display online, I unsubscribe. The blogs I continue to read? The ones where people struggle. Where the writer curses. Where the author admits that sometimes life is shitty. The blogs I keep reading are the ones that are still a story in progress–still have struggles–are less a brand and more an individual.

That being said, there is something definitely to be said for professionalism and branding. One of the changes I am looking at is making my blog design, etsy shop, packaging and promotional materials all more consistent in design and tone. I’ve experimented with different yarn labels, cards, and banners over the last couple of years. I am not completely happy with them any of them and it’s time to take greater creative responsibility of that aspect of my business. In my mind, this will make my products and yarn lines more professional, more marketable, and more desirable to the consumer, thus increasing sales. I also want to prepare to wholesale some of my yarn–not that I have anywhere to wholesale it at the moment, but I want to be able to do so when I find the right place. While I plan to give the old dot com a makeover in the next year, I really don’t want to become one of those antiseptic blogs that adheres so much to a brand nothing important ever gets said. If anything, I am endeavoring to make my blog more candid, more intimate than I have in the past–and it’s not because I think it will get me more sales.

As well as being a marketing tool, my blog is another creative outlet (not one that I necessarily utilize as well as I can, but I think of it as such nonetheless. I always intended this blog to chronicle how I go about making Tiny Dino Studios a business–and how difficult and wonderful it can be. I feel like somewhere along the way I got too tired to ever really see that through. Getting back to that place and not cutting out the stuff that makes the process sticky and frustrating is important to me. I am not cheery and happy all the time. I am often grumpy and tired. Starting a creative business and building a creative business is hard, and I want to document both the hard and successful–not just the pretty.

Yesterday was our anniversary. We had a really lovely dinner of grilled ribeye steaks with fresh horseradish, shiitake mushrooms and shallots, garlic basil shrimp, roasted baby potatoes and grilled asparagus. Our traditional anniversary dessert is cannoli.

Me-Made-May 2013 Challenge Pledge

me-made-may'13

I took the plunge!

I, Adriana of Adri Makes a Thing or Two, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May 2013. I pledge to wear at least 1 hand-made/up-cycled item 4 days a week for the duration of the month of May.

There it is!  Plunge taken.  Every year I see wonderful outfits and things that people have made, and I always miss the cut-off dates to join in the Me-Made-May challenge.  So, this year I made sure to note the calendar dates and be sure to join in.  If you'd like to learn more about the challenge, click on the button "Me-Made-May '13" above.

This is May 1st's outfit...

Item 1 is a knitted cowl I made this year.
Item 2 is the plaid skirt I made for last year's Sew Weekly childhood challenge.

I'm hoping to get some use out of the many items I make and try to rotate them a bit.  Does that happen when you make something too?  You start to like the look of something and then forget the rest of the clothes in the closet.  Perhaps, this challenge will get me to purge a few of the non-flattering items in my repertoire.

What Else?

Yarned by You

Let’s see what we have in the Yarned bu You Vault today, shall we?

First up is this Rock Island knit by Sheetah2011 in Findley. I love how open it is, but I’d be terrified of it catching on something, since I’m hard on all of my clothes.

KnitlessInSeattle knit this Bessie, which was designed by Caroline Fryar for the Fall 2012 collection of Herriot. I am in love with the stripes! Ghost Fern and Heartwood were used.

This Taiga Chowichan was knit by AlisonHW in Yearling. I love the green and purple combination and how the master and contrast color switch from the top and the bottom of the sweater.

MicheleMMPH knit this gorgeous Diamond Knit Jumper in Herriot color #6. Wow those cables look crisp and drapey – not a combination I’d typically expect1

This Cedar Leaf Shawlette was knit by jasmiepup in Moonshine #9. I love this leaf edging and I feel like I could just drive into the blue!

Finally, our friend Shirra knit this gorgeous Uma Pullover in the Sungold colorway of Sabine. Isn’t it just lovely? It looks super soft and cozy and she did a great job with the cables.

A Black Sheep Giveaway!

You all may find this difficult to believe but I have always been the black sheep of my family. I was a difficult and  hyper-active child and an out-of-control teenager. As an adult, I baffled my parents by leaving an amazing, well-paid job to start a yarn farm. Of course, everything worked out and my parents are both very proud of how hard I have worked and the amazing business I have built, but if you took a secret vote amongst my family members about who the black sheep is, I would win in a land slide.

And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. I embrace my black sheep status. Black sheep have all the fun, take all the risks, have all the adventures.

So when Susan Roth from Bainbridge Island Farm Goods asked if I’d like to do a giveaway of one of her charming handmade signs, I had no trouble picking one.

Isn’t it delightful?

This lovely 12″ x 18″ fully weather proofed aluminum sign can be yours. To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me about a black sheep moment of your own. One entry per person, please. You have from now till midnight EST Sunday, May 5th, 2013 to enter. One winner will be chosen at random, but making me laugh in your comment cannot hurt your odds.

And do check out the rest of the great stuff at Bainbridge Island Farm Goods. It’s good stuff.

Etherial Progress and Navel Gazing

Today I was so pressed for time, I took blog photos at my desk. And not fun webcam photos either. Honest to goodness blog photos.

And this is the only one I edited even a little bit

Hello desk calendar back drop.

Etherial_at_work

At least I am making progress. And I am pleased with my dye job.

I have been doing a lot of business navel-gazing lately. I am ready to make some changes in what I do, the building business kind of changes, and yet I am currently faced with the dilemma of finding time to take photos that aren’t badly lit and backed by desk calendar that’s still on the wrong month.

Mulling over big things in my spare time is not serving me as well as I would like, mostly because I feel as though I am on the verge of something with no time to act on it.

Perhaps I will know what it is when I finish this sweater.

May Day!

It’s finally May!  Hopefully this means soon my tomatoes seedlings can be transplanted outside.  We’ve still been getting temps dipping into the 40′s at night and I am rather restless for that nonsense to stop!

It also means that all of the local hay people are just about out of their stock of last year’s hay and are soon going to be making their first cuttings.  Now that Paul’s splurged on a tractor, we decided we could stock up on a big load of hay at the cheaper prices.

05.01.13a

As you can see, we made out pretty well!

05.01.13b

Oona and Neve ran around begging us to make a giant hay maze for them.

All I know is, there’s nothing like seeing a solid store of feed for your animals to get you through for awhile.  I am going to be thrilled come winter when I don’t have to move giant wheel-barrow loads of hay out to the pasture by hand!

Tractors, as it turns out (duh) are a wonderful thing.  I’m wishing we bought one sooner.  After digging out the front garden last year it was absolute heaven to have the tractor do all the work this year digging up the giant squash garden out back.

The other wonderful thing right now is LILACS!  Every year my lilac bush gets just a bit bigger (making me wish I had planted dozens more with it!) and I spend time smelling the blooms and wishing I had enough to cut big bunches to bring inside like we used to when I was growing up.

05.01.13c

Looks like I am not the only one who likes lilacs!!!!

May Calendar Picture …

May’s calendar picture is of the steps going up (or down) to the beach in Oak Bluffs.  This was my favorite beach when I was a kid.   I took this picture in Oct 2010.
