Yarn Washing

Monday’s weather was exceptionally lovely, so I thought I’d take advantage and wash out my share yarn.

I’m glad I did, too, because it has been rainy and nasty every day since.

Normally I don’t wash my yarn before using it; but since this is share yarn from Juniper Moon sheep, it was milled with a lot of lanolin left in it.  It feels heavenly on your skin (and smells wonderful as well) but you have to account for how much your yarn will change after washing if you don’t do it before you knit.  It’s easier to wash your yarn first, so you know exactly how much the wool will bloom for your finished object.

10.10.13a

First I let it soak in a bath of tepid water and Eucalan.  It’s a very mild soap that won’t harm the wool or cause it to felt.  I only very gently squeeze the yarn while it soaks.

I left it there for a little over an hour while I took care of some other things, and then gently and lightly rinsed it with clean water (some people also use a mix of water and vinegar).  Then, on to the laundry spinner!

10.10.13b

This uses only centrifugal force to spin out extra water.  It does a phenomenal job of getting the yarn almost completely dry.

10.10.13c

A LOT of water came out.

10.10.13d

This is what the soak water looked like.  That’s a lot of lanolin!

10.10.13e

And just look at that beautiful wool!  This is what all the colored fleeces from the flock look like once they’ve been processed.

Luscious!

Rescheduling Trunk Shows

Okay, I’m back for an afternoon post, but this was not the post I was planning to write! We have a little bad news for those who were planning on attending Saturday’s trunk shows at either of the two wonderful stores. Due to all the stress and exhaustion of the past few weeks, Susie is getting sick again. As in her auto-immune disorder is starting to flare up. Towards the end of the shipping craziness, Susie was starting to get sick, but we were both hoping that a few good night’s sleep would clear everything up and that she’d be okay for the trunk shows. Unfortunately that is not actually the case. She’s got an emergency appointment at John Hopkins on Friday morning and will hopefully be on her way home to Virginia Friday afternoon to try and get some rest and to get better.

We can’t say how disappointed we are that she won’t be able to be at Knit or Purls of Wisdom on Saturday, especially because some of our favorite people were planning on attending, and these are really awesome shops. Both owners were incredibly gracious with our last-minute canceling and we’re looking forward to rescheduling these events for as soon as she’s feeling well enough to go. We’ll let you know what the new date is as soon as we know.

We’re both learning about how far Susie can push herself before she needs to rest and it’s clear that this was too much. We certainly didn’t plan for the timing to work out this way (shipping madness back to back with a trunk show tour) and are definitely being more aware of how precious her energy is and what we can both do to protect it.

Susie would have written this herself, but she’s on her way to tonight’s trunk show at Chelsea Yarns. Tomorrow she’ll be at Pins and Needles. And then she’ll be getting ready for a good rest.

Last chance for NJ / PA trunk shows!

I’ll be back this afternoon with another post, but I wanted to make sure that no one missed the rest of the week’s trunk shows. Please check them out for details, as you may need to RSVP to some of them.

Apple Picking 2013!

We had planned to go apple picking yesterday while our friend Trina was working, but the monsoon-like weather kept us away.

Fortunately, today’s weather was absolutely perfect!  The sun was out but it was only about 70 degrees, which is nice when you’re hiking along the mountaintop hauling heavy bags of fruit!

10.08.13c

I wonder if anyone reads this before they go out and yank apples off the trees?

10.08.13d

10.08.13e

We were lucky we went today; for once our timing worked out and we got to pick our favorites: York, Braeburn, Fuji and Winesap.

10.08.13f

10.08.13g

10.08.13h

10.08.13i

10.08.13j

10.08.13k

Oona filled her bag so full she couldn’t carry it.  She wanted to be sure I burned enough calories to earn my apple cider doughnut afterwards.

10.08.13l

10.08.13m

10.08.13n

10.08.13o

10.08.13q

In the end we hauled home 63 pounds of apples.

10.08.13b

That’s a lot of work for me!  Tomorrow I will start up a giant batch of applesauce.  Maybe some apple butter.  Apple pie.  Apple crisp?  Maybe dehydrate some?  All I know for certain is that it’s going to be all apple things, all week!

Vineyard October …

100_2181

101_3321

October is, in my opinion one of the most spectacular months of the year.

Nature provides a fiery display of color in October.

The greens and vivid colors of summer have been replaced with the rusts and orange hues of autumn.

The Vineyard is a beautiful place to visit in the fall months… there are plenty of activities to take part in or just relax and enjoy the cool, crisp, beautiful month of October.

I can’t wait to be there …

Behind the Yarn: Sales Meeting

Things have been moving along behind the scenes while we work on getting the Spring/Summer 2014 ready for release. Last time I updated you I had just about figured out all my sample knitters. Well, at this point, I’m getting sample garments back at a terrific pace! And weeks earlier than the final deadline. Besides just having some really fantastic, quick knitters this round, they were also offered a bonus if they could get their sample to me before October 1st. Why then?

Well, every 6 months in October and April our distributor has a sales meeting. All the sales reps from around the country come and get to see the new upcoming yarns and receive sales materials so that the sales reps can each go to their territory and talk to yarn shop owners, showing them the many options of yarn available and helping them to select what will work for their shop. Susie is actually at the sales meeting right now, explaining the vision of the collections our terrific designers have put together as well as the properties of each awesome yarn to the sales reps.

Having good sales materials is really important. Susie and I have pretty good imaginations and can see the awesome potential of a design from just a small sketch and maybe talking with a designer. The sales reps and yarn shop owners don’t have the luxury of talking with the designer or even necessarily seeing their previous work, so the sales materials are really important.

What’s in the sales materials? Each collection has a paragraph telling about the yarn, a paragraph about the collection, and brief bio of the designer. Then each design has a page like this:

Essex Sales Materials

You can see the final sweater here

Some sales materials has final photography, but it means that you need to really work ahead and you need the co-operation of the mills you’re working with. We have not been able to get that far ahead, but are working hard at getting us to the point at which this is feasible. This season, I was aiming to photograph as many samples as I could for the sales meeting. A handful of samples arrived for the bonus deadline, and I went out to the park just as the sun was going down to take some pictures.

There’s a gorgeous park near where I lived called The Sheep Fold. I thought it was really fitting that I take some pictures there, so I went. It has trails and a grassy picnic area, and also a leash-free dog park. This photo doesn’t show how magnificent the sky was. It was AMAZING.

SalesMaterials3

I set up my mannequin a number of places, looking for green grass that might suggest spring or summer and a green background.

SalesMaterials4

I did not consider, however, how freaked out dogs might be at this headless person-like thing. I had numerous dogs barking at me. Usually they left me alone after their (sometimes-curious) owner called me off. I’m sure that many person wanted to come over, gawk, and ask what I was doing. Only one person did and when I explained that I taking photographs of some knitwear, they nodded absently and quickly moved on.

SalesMaterials2

However, Piglet (I know his name because his owner yelled it continuously) would.not.leave.me.alone. He never got within arm’s reach, always carefully circling the mannequin and me and letting off the most outrageous howls.

SalesMaterials1

Almost the entire time I was there, he howled at me. Fortunately he wasn’t aggressive, so I just continued to take my photographs of garments. Stuff like this heavily cropped photo:

When I arrived home, two more garments had arrived to be photographed. I photographed them the next morning. In the wooded area right by the front of my house. I wasn’t ready to face the dog park again so soon!

Done and DONE. Next? Vermont!

What a hot weekend we had!  You would not have known it was October.  90's and sweaty.  Wool sales were down a bit I think...no fun fondling that fibery goodness when you have sweat dripping down your face and sticky sweaty fingers....(and I think the government shut down may have been in the backs of some of the shoppers minds..)

I am happy to say pottery feels good in any weather so I am completely satisfied by my sales.  I have loyal customers and meet more awesome and interesting new people every year. A big thank you to all of you!

The light in the tents is never good.  So I took no pictures of my booth this time around.

So look at these instead.

I LOVE this sign.

I did well stocking my inventory with Alpaca pots this year.  As we were setting up I told my good friend April (who drives up from Western North Carolina to help me every year!!  She is such a good friend.) that I really need to add bunnies to my repetoire.  Not  an hour later I had some disappointed bunny lovers make that exact request.  So I was on a mission this weekend looking for models....

Cashmere!

Scottish Blackface.  Isn't nature amazing?

A festival does not feel like a festival without some Scottish pipes.

And handsome ones at that!

This week I am working to wrap up all the post show book keeping (I try not to complain, the more receipts to work through the better the show!) clean off my desk and generally get the house back into shape.  All the prep work for two shows in a row definitely puts housework on the back burner.  So I am working to get everything sorted out, maybe relax with a good book here and there.

Then on Friday its off to Vermont to visit my favorite shepherd at Gilead Fiber Farm!
