Zig Zag Quilt Finished!

Happy Easter!  And, happy finished Zig-Zag Quilt!

The FMQ foot for my new machine is still on back-order so I decided I should just stop waiting and finish the quilt.  So... I did!




 I used a couple of tools to help me finish the quilt which I can recommend...


Firstly, I used the Robert Kaufmann Android phone app to help me calculate how much fabric I needed for binding and sashing.  You can find that here.  For i-phones you can find it on i-tunes.

Secondly, I used this tutorial to get a kind of hand cross-stitch look with a plain old zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine using this tutorial here.

It looks like this when finished...


On the front, the finish is invisible, but the back has a pseudo-cross-stitch look which I really like!

And, that's about it.  I cut the striped binding fabric across the stripes so it would make a checkered border, and echo quilted the zig-zags to add some interest and structure.  I'm really pleased with how it came out, and hopefully the baby will enjoy crawling on it and being cozy in it!  I'll post a tutorial in case you all want to make your own zig-zag quilt.  It's fairly straightforward.

Hurry Up and Wait…

My one Spring show is a week from today (Powhatan Festival of Fiber a one day event).  The kiln is firing away with the last bisque.  I have learned to fire during the day...that way the kiln cools at night without me standing there tapping my toes in impatience!

But here are a few pictures of things waiting to be picked up by Serendipity Quilt Shop in Delaware.  You may remember that she has requested chickens, quilts and the beach!  With a few sheep thrown in for good measure.







I had a special request for a chicken yarn bowl.  What do you think?


And then of course there is the rest of the livestock....





And a sheep of a different breed.  Jacob Sheep have FOUR horns.  There are a few vendors at these festivals that sell their wonderful wool.


While I waiting for the pots to dry (remember that are currently slowly heating to 1888 degrees in my kiln as I write this) I helped celebrate Earth Day with my local Spinners and Weavers Guild.  It was a beautiful day after such a long cold winter!

Hot Pattern Alert!

This week, I found two new indie patterns that use JMF’s Herriot yarn, and they are just too lovely not to share with y’all.

You can find the pattern for this wonder on Ravelry. I’m calling this one “a giant cowl you can wrap up in and watch t.v.”.

At the opposite end of the size spectrum is the Salt Creek Cowl by Cory Ellen Boberg.

Herriot is so soft and warm– it’s perfect for wearing next to your skin. It’s sort of an afghan you can wear out of the house.
