Scrapbooking: Greetings from the Lido Deck!

I am so happy with this one!  I couldn't believe I got it done on time to be considered for the Make Art That Sells weekly review either.  Our things finally arrived from Germany and it meant we were in super-unpack-cardboard-box-processing mode!  But, I was also in a "making mode" as well as "where the heck is my scanner mode"... and so I made and found my scanner at last.

Here is my work resulting from the theme we were given: vintage cruise ship correspondence.  It's a bit of a mash-up but I think between the chosen color palette and my brush pen illustrations which have a late 50's early 60's vibe in them, that it's enough to cover the vintage aspect.   I really wanted a Piña colada after drawing this... love those so much.

Sheep Stash- Part Two

As promised, I’m back today with some cool ideas for things to do with our Sheep Stash sheep and alpacas besides decorating your Christmas tree. This weekend was super fun for me because I got to go to the craft store and go wild!

Everything is better with glitter, right?

For my first project, I want to make a winter wonderland inspired wreath using some gorgeous handspun yarn that I’ve had in my stash for years. This skein is absolutely lovely- soft and with an incredible sheen- but at only 105 yards, I never came up with  a project for it.

Sheep Stash is a great way to actually use some of those lovely “art skeins” you bought because you loved them but haven’t used yet. And you get to see and appreciate the yarn every day.

IMG_6509

First, I spray painted my sheep and alpacas. I did some in metallic silver and some in white. I also spray painted a grapevine wreath from Michael’s silver.

Then I wrapped the animals in the handspun.

All that was left was to attach the sheep to the wreath. You can use a glue gun if you want the sheep to be on the wreath semi-permanently or you can use twist ties like these:

I found these in the cake decorating section at Michael’s. By running them under the yarn I was able to attach the sheep and it will be a snap to remove them and change the yarn if I want to do a different color next year.

Sheep Stash!

The finished wreath! I was super happy with it and it only took a couple of hours from start to finish.

Next up, another wreath, but this one is yarn-less.

Once again I spray painted a grapevine wreath, but white this time.

IMG_6498

Then is was glitter time! (I thought these glitter trays were silly at first but they were actually really useful. You use a separate tray for each glitter color and then you can use that little spout in the upper right corner to pour the overage back into the bottle. Genius! Also from Michael’s in the Martha Stewart section.)

IMG_6504

This is the shade of blue glitter I used. It’s called Crystal Mint (I thought it said Crystal Meth the first time I read it!) but it looks like a wintery blue to me!

For the other sheep I used a silver glitter and a white.

I bought the Martha Stewart Glitter Glue but Elmer’s and a paint brush would work just as well, I think.

IMG_6554

I didn’t have yarn to hide the twist ties on this year so these guys are glue gunned to the wreath itself.

If you haven’t ordered you Sheep Stash yet, get on it! We will only be selling them from now through 12/15 (or when my husband collapses from making sheep all night, every night, whichever comes first.)

If you are going to Michael’s for supplies for these or any other project, don’t forget your coupon like I always do. This week’s coupon is 25% off your entire purchase (including sale items). Just put your zip code in here and it will take you to the coupon page.

A portion of your purchase price will go to Heifer International to buy real live sheep to help lift families out of poverty. In past years we’ve donated between $1500-$2000- this year our goal is $3000!

I’ll be back tomorrow with more ideas for decorating your sheep! In the meantime, we’d love to see yours. Please post your pics on our Facebook page.

Welcome Back, Knitter – year 2

This is the second installment of a two-year catch-up on the knitting side of what I've been up to while absent from this blog ~

IMG_3522
Mess o'Mitts

This time last year I was in the throes of knitting a series of fingerless mittens for friends. I finished each of three pairs in about three weeks, coincidentally using US3s. The first two pairs used the same pattern and the same yarn: Nalu Mitts by Leila Raabe [Rav link] and Rowan Tapestry – a discontinued wool-soy single. The splitty factor of that yarn led me to modify the pattern on the second pair, keeping the twisted-rib faux-cable columns moving in a straight line rather than waves.

  IMG_3589

The third pair I knit in a silk-alpaca yarn as a valentine for a BFF who loves hearts. She was in the midst of some marital heartbreak, so I knitted her some handy love. I used the Semplice Mitts pattern, free from KnitPicks, and added the purled heart motif using a chart I found on Craft Passion. After I completed the first/left mitt, I decided to put two hearts on the right hand.

That's a Wrap

A funny thing happened when my fave LYS The Yarn Lounge closed its doors. My friend Frances and I stopped by to grab some last skeins and encountered a Californian who was visiting her son and daughter-in-law. Not only was she a most lovely woman, she was wearing an incredible cashmere wrap of ingenious short-row construction, which she kindly spread on the table for us to examine. She couldn't instantly recall the pattern source, but she thought it was free and listed on Ravelry, and she offered to email us the deets upon her return to the West Coast. A few weeks later she kept her word and sent the link to Misti Alpaca's Ruffle Cape in Garter

I cast on 84 stitches instead of 72 to make it a little longer overall, and the Muench Bergamo knitted-ribbon yarn turned out to be perfect for this project. Keeping the ends from unraveling was a bit tricky, and I had to stitch some of them down in the finishing, but it's kept me super cozy on recent fall mornings in a chilly old house. I'm glad I never knitted that Salt Peanuts cardi from Spring 2004 Interweave Knits

I made one more wrap last winter: Deborah Frank's Swerve, also featuring short rows. Brooks Farm Acero (left over from this cardigan) and Fleece Artist Suri Blue. I donated it to our middle-school auction, where it was purchased by a good friend.

And I reckon this cashmere cowl counts as a wrap. It's the Infinitude Scarf by Jeni Chase, made in two skeins of the Jade Sapphire cashmere the pattern calls for. Yet again I used Revelry to find the perfect pattern for my yarn.

My Favorite Pattern

If favorites are measured by repetition, memorization, variation – well, the Stay-On Baby Booties from Melanie Falick and Kristin Nicholas's Knitting for Baby must be mine. According to my Ravelry project page, I've knit at least 30 pairs. Definitely have that thing memorized! And I'm pretty sure my earliest recipients are teenagers now. During Wee C's 2013-14 school year, three of her teachers delivered their first-borns, followed closely by the librarian in fall of 2014 – that's four sets right there, and a friend of Little B got a second brother in that same stretch. In August my cousin and his wife began their family with boy-girl twins; I left this pair o'pairs in Florida when we visited them for spring break.

Still to come: KALs, WIPs, and Alabama Chanin – and other non-stitching topics!

Who Turned the Heat Back On?

After we got used to some absolutely beautiful, crisp, autumn weather, we are back into the mid-seventies now.  We all feel like we are roasting alive!

All of the soups, stews, and warming foods we had planned seem downright ridiculous now.

So do all of the holiday decorations I am seeing going up everywhere.

11.05.15a

The sheep have been chasing the shade all around the field. They’re not fans of the heat, either. It means there are still too many flies around.

11.05.15b

11.05.15c

11.05.15d

I’ve also had to turn the air conditioning back on; in the fall and winter the back of our house (which is all windows) gets direct sunlight the ENTIRE day. It’s great when it’s cold out. Not so much when it’s unseasonably warm.

11.05.15e

The kittens, Poppet and Widget, are settling in nicely. We had them separated for awhile we we awaited their FIV/Feline leukemia tests, and also because they were so tiny we worried about the dogs stepping on them.

They’re still pretty darn small, but they’re learning to navigate us a bit.

11.05.15f

They LOVE the dogs, and Cini, especially, loves them.

11.05.15g

Widget is only slightly larger than Cini’s paw.

11.05.15h

Had to throw in this picture Neve took of Oona playing in the leaves!

A nasty cold virus has been making its rounds here for weeks now, and we are trudging along trying to get through it.

I’ve been occupied with new knitting; not only did I cast on a pair of socks, but I’ve also started swatching for my next Shepherd sweater AND an additional sweater pattern called “Chimney Fire”.  I couldn’t help myself! After Rhinebeck, i want to knit all the things!

Bring back the cold weather!

Damage

btt button

Have you ever damaged a book? Dropped it in the bathtub? Spilled a bottle of ink? Used it to mop up spilled wine? Or just broken its back (poor thing).

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

A Group of Charming Cuties

Last week, I had something very interesting happen.  I had a kind of cute-splosion.  I started illustrating for the children's apparel market so I can begin to pitch my work.  I did some short research by looking at my son's clothes and picking out my super-top favorites.... and then it all just flowed.

It was remarkable.  I just worked on Illustrator and out came these characters and their back-stories and little lives.  I kept wanting (and still do) to keep on drawing them and their accessories and interactions...

Next, I want to develop each character on their own!  What do you think?
