The In-Depth Look:

Just like it says on the cover, this book is full of knitted hat designs. Twenty of them, suitable for women (all of them) and men (some of them).

It’s an editorial collection–brought together by the publisher, rather than from the mind of a single author, but the designers are all top-notch: Meghan Babin, Rachel Coopey, Faina Goberstein, Tanis Gray, Melissa LaBarre, Annie Rowden, Courtney Spainhower, Melissa Thomson, Robin Ulrich, Alexis Winslow, and Heather Zoppetti.

Not surprisingly, they’re all good designs. While they run the gamut of beanies to tams to cloches and so on, they’re mostly all close-to-the-head styles. One or two have a little more room built in for decorative draping or slouching, and the silhouettes vary a bit, but (from a personal perspective) none of them would really suit my own head of curls–close fitting hats make my hair puff out at the bottom and always look fairly ridiculous unless I have my hair pinned or braided back. There are only two designs in this otherwise nice book that would look remotely good on me … but then, that’s a persistent problem for me with knitted hats. I need a little width in the brim to balance the curls below and knitted hats almost never have brims–an unfortunate oversight, I think, since I wear hats as much to keep the sun out of my eyes and off my face as to keep my head warm.

I’m getting off point, though. The twenty designs here are good knitted hat designs. There are color and stitch patterns to play with and plenty of details to add interest.

It’s a good collection, and you should check it out over at Amazon.com.

All the Pretty Ladies

The flock has been perkier and happier lately with the cooler weather, and who can blame them? Even the dogs seem more content, now that the flies are dying off and they don’t need to burrow into the mud like pigs to escape the heat.

I was tempted to move everyone out to the back pasture a few weeks ago, considering it is full now of beautiful green grass, but decided that with winter coming I’d keep them out front to make it easier to keep their water fresh and unfrozen, being closer to the house.

There’s also another reason I am keeping them in the smaller paddock for the winter and waiting for spring to move them to fresh pasture: lambing.

Yes!

Our amazing shearer Emily is bringing me a loaner ram soon so we can enjoy babies in the spring!  The ram is a gorgeous Blue-Faced Leicester, and I’m thrilled to mate him to our Border Leicester ewes, since I’d like some fleeces for hand-spinning.

Carina here has a beautiful fleece. I can’t wait to see how a lam from her will turn out.

They were NOT having any of my picture-taking shenanigans. They saw me in their paddock with an object in my hand and surely that MUST mean feeding time?

Basil decided that if I didn’t have real food, he’d nibble on my shirt instead and prevent me from getting a decent picture of him.

The bow before the pounce. He and Sabine are always happy to be pushy for ear and belly scratches, or to follow you around the field trying to put their noses in inappropriate places. I’m still trying to beef Orzo up a bit, and it’s just barely starting to be noticeable. He’s really growing into quite a handsome guy, just like his father. Now if only we could cure his fence-hopping wanderlust!

9th Blogiversary…

imageedit_68_9630010697

On Wednesday, October 5th MV Obsession will be 9 years old.  NINE.  Nine years of obsession about the place that I love most in the world, that’s a lot of obsessing. Today’s post will be number 982 and it all began with these words…

Hi, my name is Joan and I’m a Vineyard-a-holic…

Followed by…

My obsession/love affair with Martha’s Vineyard started early in my life.  I was around 2 and a half in this picture and this was already my second trip.

My connection to MV was through my mother who although was born in Maine was raised on MV.   She went to Oak Bluffs high school (there was no regional high school, each town had its own back then) and after graduating moved to NJ where she met my father and quickly converted him into an MV fan.

We stayed with my godparents in Oak Bluffs every summer.    Life on MV was so different from Newark, NJ where I spent the other part of my existence.   My mother and I would take the train from NY to Woods Hole in June,  my dad would arrive for the entire month of August and we’d all sadly leave the beginning of September.

My summers were filled with trips to the beach in Oak Bluffs… endless rides on the Flying Horses… ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave… popcorn at Darling’s… fairs and parades… at least one trip to Gay Head (Aquinnah)… visiting relatives in Indian Hill… movies… setting pins at the bowling alley in Oak Bluffs… endless hours at the Oak Bluffs library… Bible school at the Tabernacle… Illumination Night… and one especially painful memory of my first and only dance lesson at the Tivoli ballroom where the Oak Bluffs police department now stands.

These are just a few snippets of memories and stories I’d like to share.  Hope whoever reads them finds them as enjoyable as I did experiencing them.’

MV Obsession isn’t strictly about the Vineyard anymore but like the header says it’s ‘almost all the time.’

Feel free to wander through the category links along the right side, visitors are always welcome

Happy 9th blogiversary MV Obsession🙂

Kisah Dongeng Putri Salju dan Tujuh Kurcaci

Alkisah, hiduplah seorang perempyan, bernama Snow White.

Sementara tujuh kurcaci datang pulang kerja. Mereka pergi di dalam. Di sana, mereka menemukan Putri terbangun. Dia melihat dwarf. Dwarf berkata; "Apakah namamu?". Snow White berkata; "Nama saya adalah Putri salju". Salah satu dwarf berkata; "Jika Anda ingin, Anda dapat hidup di sini dengan kami". Putri menceritakan seluruh kisah tentang dirinya. Kemudian Putri salju dan tujuh kerdil hidup bahagia selamanya. baca cerita lengkapnya disini http://dongengterbaru.blogspot.com/

The DIY Mojo is Back!

Watch out! I'm getting that itch to make clothes again! Bought a sewing pattern after receiving some lovely new fabric from a friend. Bought yarn for the first time in over a year, and am now putting together some new DIY projects.

Knitting:
Sadly our local LYS, the Loop & Leaf is closing, and Celeste the lovely owner of the shop had to sell all her yarn stock to prepare for the sale of the building. This meant steep cuts in price to the yarn and so I bought two small lots of yarn: 5 skeins of Juniper Moon Farm's Zooey and 7 skeins of Berroco Maya. We didn't have any stockists in Germany who carried Juniper Moon Farm or Berroco yarn so I was happy to finally get to try some of the more American brand yarns in warm-weather varieties. The Zooey is a cotton/linen blend and the Maya is a cotton/alpaca blend (chain structure).  I don't have too many warm weather yarns so it was perfect.

My first swatch in over a year! (Juniper Moon Farms Zooey)

Berroco's Maya yarn

Sewing:
We took a short trip to Germany, and I was able to catch up with friends. One of my friends is going super-minimal-no-waste in her household so she foisted some beautiful fabric on me (see the first pic). It didn't take much to convince me to take it! I want to make a blouse and a skirt for work.

Quilting:
Finally, I finished both sides of the fun "blue-green" patchwork quilt I started last year. So now all that's left is the actual quilting!

And that's what's happening in my craft-room (which is also the living room and art studio and general multi-purpose room)!
