Weekly Challenge: Tiny…

The prompt is:  In this week’s challenge, show us tiny. Capture something at a smaller scale. Create your own miniature scene. You can also interpret the theme in other ways by capturing your favorite tiny things — from your baby’s hands to belongings that are special to you — or documenting a small, quiet moment in your day.

These miniature books were my father’s and are probably more than 80 years old.  They measure 1 1/2 x 2 inches and are leather covered.

The William Shakespeare book is 760 pages long.

Veteran’s Day 2016…

100_8050

Thank you to all our veterans.

Cats and Drinks

This weekend I had the house to myself while Paul and the girls were visiting family in New York.  Maddie came down and we went and had lunch with our friend Kim before heading to our friend Heather’s bridal shower.  We made candle centerpieces for the wedding while the host served us hot buttered rum. Um…Heather? I’m gonna need that recipe.😀

When I wasn’t cleaning or spinning wool, or snuggling kitties (had them ALLLL to myself!) I was making some yummies for holiday consumption.

First was a pineapple-infused mandarin vodka for book club.

11-10-16c

I got a large mason jar from Michael’s – big enough to hold 750ml of vodka – and chopped up some fresh pineapple. I covered it with a whole bottle of Absolut Mandarin, and it gets to sit for two weeks now. I can’t wait!

The second thing I knew I needed to make is Alton Brown’s Eggnog. This one will sit for a month or so – or until after Thanksgiving anyway.

The only change I made was accidental – I left out the rum.

BUT.

I taste-tested before bottling it (it made a little more than 2 quarts) and it was delicious. I can tell after aging for a bit that it will be transcendent. I may have to buy some more bottles and make more!

11-10-16d

Of course, I shouldn’t have been surprised; you really can’t go wrong with Alton Brown!

Now that we find ourselves so close to Turkey Day I encourage you to try the eggnog if that’s up your alley. I’ll be poring over my recipes and planning and shopping for the big meal the nest few days.  Although we don’t have anyone coming (or at least, no one’s mentioned anything yet) I’ll still make a mountain of food. We gots to have our leftovers, yo!

11-10-16a

“Did someone say turkey?”

11-10-16b

“Mmmmmmmmm turkey!”

The Day After

This morning I awoke with a knot in the pit of my stomach.

I feel like I should have done more.

Most of this past year, I have been focusing my mental energy inward. I was growing a baby, preparing myself for labor, trying not to panic about the logistics of bringing another member into our family.

I did not have energy for the political.

I knew I was with her from the beginning.

The other candidate’s speeches were incomprehensible and tailored to incite rather than to unite.

I am the person who called sexism and racism. Probably the one you brushed off because I didn’t say it loud enough.

Today I am in mourning. I am grief stricken. I am outraged. I want to give Hillary Clinton a big hug and tell her that I was honored to vote for her yesterday. That her name was even on the ballot was a huge victory, and I know how hard she fought. But I also know that it is not enough.

It is not enough in a world where a woman has to be perfect to compete in an arena where men are routinely corrupt.

It is not enough in a world where people of color don’t feel safe in their homes.

It is not enough when LGBTQ people are shot down in what is meant to be a safe place.

It is not enough, and I didn’t say it loud enough.

Life Lessons

btt button

What’s the best life lesson you learned from a book when you were a kid?

(I specify as a kid because a lot of lessons you learn as a child stick through your lifetime, but things you learn as an adult don’t necessarily get internalized as well. The follow-up, of course, is to ask you whether you would change your answer to something you’ve read as a grown-up.)

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

And also–don’t forget, folks–sometimes WordPress’s spam filter seems to decide that a lot of perfectly valid answers are spam. I periodically check throughout the day for lost comments. But, PLEASE–if your comment doesn’t show, don’t post it four more times in the hopes that one of them will go through. I get very, very tired trying to sort out the duplicates (grin).

Just to kick things off, I’ve got two:

One, on the importance of planning courtesy of Claudia in From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler.. Not only did she execute a brilliant scheme of running away and hiding in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she says this to her brother when they’ve got a short time to browse the the famous mixed-up files:

“Five minutes of planning are worth fifteen minutes of just looking. “

(This one is complimented by the Commodore in Nancy Bond’s very under-rated but wonderful “The Best of Enemies,” who protests at the youngsters’ impatience, insisting that they’re in such a hurry, they don’t realize that NOW is when they have the time to think, to plan. Man, I love that book.)

And, two, from Sarah Crewe in A Little Princess on the importance of keeping your temper.

“When people are insulting you, there is nothing so good for them as not to say a word—just to look at them and THINK. Miss Minchin turns pale with rage when I do it, Miss Amelia looks frightened, and so do the girls. When you will not fly into a passion people know you are stronger than they are, because you are strong enough to hold in your rage, and they are not, and they say stupid things they wish they hadn’t said afterward. There’s nothing so strong as rage, except what makes you hold it in—that’s stronger. It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies. I scarcely ever do.”

I’ve learned many more, valuable lessons over the years, but those two have always stuck with me.
