A few more blocks and an ironing board makover

001 015 012

Pressing my blocks properly was really starting to drive me crazy. I haven’t had the new ironing board cover for very long but already it’s degraded beyond useful and since the ironing board isn’t a solid surface it really makes a difference. I’ve been meaning to do an ironing board makeover for at least a year and the wonkiness of the bear claw block was the last straw. I used a combination of Madame Purl’s method and the tutorial from Sew We Quilt. My board is 1/2-inch poplar plywood and it’s covered with two twin cotton quilt battings, each folded in half, and a layer of duck cloth. It’s screwed to the ironing board (old cover removed)  as directed in the Sew We Quilt tutorial. Now that’s a bit better!

Yet more Farmer’s Wife blocks

I’m on a roll with these but I really need to stop and get back to other projects. I have a quilt to be quilted before the end of the month and then another quilt to be assembled as a late gift. Must stop sewing these addictive squares!

Farmer’s Wife progress

Here are three more blocks for the Farmer’s Wife quilt. The center block needs to be ripped and redone. My scant 1/4 is a little too scant. Sometimes it doesn’t matter but in this case it would clip off the points of my little squares. By the end of the year I should really know my 1/4-inch seam quite well!

and what would I do without my helpers?

Template marathon

templates: done!

I’ve had several long sessions working on the templates for the Farmer’s Wife quilt. There are just over 100 and I’ve done all of them except the basket handle because I haven’t decided if I’m going to do hand or machine applique. The next class meets Tuesday, I can’t wait!

Templates

farmer's wife templates

The Farmer’s Wife quilt uses a large number of templates and I’ve been hard at work carefully tracing and cutting. Most of them are used many times but for 111 blocks you still need a ginormous stack of templates. I’ve made a pretty good dent and it won’t be much longer before they are all done.
