Wool Over Your Eyes

This afternoon a friend and I scoped out the newest yarn store in town. Wool Over Your Eyes, located in downtown Greenville, opened its doors for the first time today and is hosting an Open House this evening.

The shop carries a variety of yarns, including a great selection of Ella Rae, my favorite of which had to be the Lace Merino Worsted. So soft and in such gorgeous, bright colorways.
I was thrilled to see that Sabine, Findley Dappled, and Yearling, the Spring/Summer collection from Juniper Moon Farm, were on their shelves, as were the accompanying pattern books. (There may have been some discreet squishing and sniffing, but there is no photographic evidence.)

In addition to the yarns they also carry assorted needles and notions. My friend purchased some double pointed needle holders, and I came away with a 60 inch cable that is compatible with my Knit Picks Interchangeables.
The space itself is bright, full of natural light, and welcoming. There are two large tables with chairs for classes and a cute sitting area for lounging and stitching.

I have for awhile been contemplating buying a loom and learning to weave. I am super excited to take one of their beginner level weaving classes in April to see whether weaving is something that I might enjoy before making a huge investment in a loom. There were at least 5 looms in the store, and students will be able to use one of the shop looms for the class.
The staff were welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The owner even served us tea and chocolate doughnuts while we knit. (Seriously!)

In addition to their web site, you can find find Wool Over Your Eyes on Facebook. Stop by the store and check the place out for yourself. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

By Hand (updated…..)

(FANTASTIC NEWS!  The kickstarter campaign was FULLY FUNDED in only 5 days!!  A real testament to Susan Gibbs since everyone who knows her knows any project she starts will be QUALITY.  Don't hesitate to donate still if you are just reading this.  Extra money will go towards more video tutorials, PDFs and increased content!  SO proud of everyone that made this happen so fast!)

I often assume that most of my readers are artists.  Even if you don't call yourself one, I'll bet you do make things.  Whether you are a gardener (painting with flowers), a cook (designing with flavors), a stay at home mom (creating a home) or a potter or a painter or a writer or a knitter or a weaver or.....we are ALL artists, creative beings.  Our hands are our tools.  Which brings me to By Hand.

By Hand is the newest and best to date project created by my artist/shepherd friend Susan Gibbs of Juniper Moon Farm fame.  By Hand is a magazine devoted to all that is hand made!

(Below is borrowed from the Juniper Moon Farm announcement on Susie's blog)

By Hand will be a lifestyle magazine for people who make, with departments for cooking, crafting, DIY, gardening, and do-gooding, with a bit of travel and profiles of makers every month.

The idea is to celebrate creating things with our hands, and to explore the motivation to make things in a world where there are cheaper and immediate alternatives. It will be both practical (patterns, DIY projects, etc) and thoughtful, with a lovely and gentle aesthetic.

This magazine is designed to be a gorgeously produced, photographed and written piece of art.  Something to be savored and saved . Susie has started a kickstarter campaign to get her and her staff started on this awesome venture.  Won't you hop on over to Kickstarter and support her???

By Hand

For Christmas in 2010, Husband gave me a share of yarn from Juniper Moon Farm, and it has truly been the best gift that I have ever received. Like ever. Really. I am not exaggerating.

Not only did I receive 6 skeins of the most beautifully dyed, wonderfully soft American-grown Cormo wool, but the through this gift, I came to know Shepherd Susie, owner of the farm, and the Juniper Moon Farm group on Ravelry. In this group, I have found kind hearts, generous spirits, and fellow farm lovers. The women of this group have become my friends, and I am proud and privileged to know them.

So, today is my day to do just a little something to pay them back for welcoming me so warmly and to thank them for kindnesses they have shown me.  I want to tell you about By Hand.

By Hand is the soon-to-be Juniper Moon Farm magazine. To quote Susie, By Hand will:
celebrate creating things with our hands, and explore the motivation to make things in a world where there are cheaper and immediate alternatives. It will be both practical (patterns, DIY projects, etc) and thoughtful, with a lovely and gentle aesthetic.
This very morning, JMF launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the launch of By Hand. Please consider making a small donation to help get By Hand off the ground. There are some fantastic rewards lined up as part of the Kickstarter campaign, and I promise you it will be worth it.

What a Week!

Did you know that we ship internationally?

Pick up one of our pattern
and join in for a knit along
or get help from me on a
project!
If you've been paying attention to Ravelry, Twitter, Facebook or Google+, you'd know that today begins the second week that Midwest Yarn's website has been up and running!  We had a great first week too.

Most of the yarn we ordered is in, as well as the pattern books that support the yarn lines we carry.  Just be aware that Noro will take a little bit longer to get in, as the supplier is backordered like crazy.  Noro yarns are hand spun and hand dyed in Japan from high quality materials.  They are then shipped out of one of the few ports that were not affected by last year's tsunami.  Because of the devastation from the tsunami, it takes can take a little longer to ship Noro yarns to the US.  At least a yarn like this is worth the wait!  Especially now that we've got the Knit Noro book available to order.

Findley Dappled
pattern book
now available!
We've also been searching like crazy for store fronts for the brick-and-mortar shop that would be open to the public.  I'm happy to announce that we've found what we've been looking for and should be signing a lease soon (keep your fingers and toes crossed).  Move in would be around the first week in May and we'd like to get the shop up and running within a few months' time.

Sabine booklet
now available!
In the interim, you'll see our ads on Ravelry and Talk to the Trees blog.  Head on over to the website and pick up some of the highest rated yarns available!  Your purchases go right into making more yarn lines available and the brick and mortar shop become a reality.  A brick and mortar shop means availability for classes and more!

What We’ll Carry

We're right on schedule to go live by the end of February!

I'm happy to report that our yarn and knitting needle orders have been made!  Some of the yarns I ordered are newer, meaning new lines or new colors so they will take longer to be stocked in the online shop.  Once we get a decent amount of stock in, we will go live!  But here's what you can expect to see coming soon:
  • Noro - Silk Garden and Silk Garden Lite (newer colors, so will take some time to get in).  Noro is a one-of-a-kind type of yarn.  Its lines have unique color combinations, making finished items like a work of art.
  • Louisa Harding - Ondine, Nerissa (new line), Grace Hand Dyed and Grace Silk & Wool.
  • Sirdar - Baby Bamboo and Smiley Stripes.
  • Juniper Moon Farm - Findley Dappled and Sabine (both are new yarn lines).
  • Ella Rae - Classic Wool and Lace Merino.
  • Debbie Bliss - Rialto Aran.
We'll be sure to carry some of the books that support the yarn lines that we have coming in.

The knitting needles are Clover.  All needles, including the circulars are bamboo.  The dpns are Takumi Velvet, an excellent bamboo dpn (have a set and LOVE them).  We'll be ordering crochet hooks soon, can't forget you crocheters out there!

I'm also starting what I call the "Wish List".  It'll be a list of the yarn lines I'd like to carry as we grow.  You can always leave comment on the blog, Facebook, Twitter, or Ravelry group for lines to add to the wishlist, which will be kept on the blog and updated as we get recommendations.

Check out Knitting Fever's website for free patterns and for a preview of what we'll have available (or to add items to the wish list).

Welcome to Midwest Yarn!

We will post when our website is set to go live.  It should be up and running by mid to late February.  Until then our Ravelry ads will point you to the blog.
Welcome to the Midwest Yarn blog!  Midwest Yarn, a Cherished Moments company, is a small business operated out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My name is Melina and I am the proud owner of this wonderful yarn shop.  Over the past few years, I have been operating Cherished Moments, dreaming about the many different options available for needle artists when it comes to yarn.  And then it hit me, OPEN A YARN STORE!

Our goal is to provide the highest quality yarn to knitters and crocheters alike.  There's nothing like proudly wearing a handmade garment and feeling how soft and luxurious the yarn is.  We carefully select our yarns to make sure that we only stock lines made from natural fibers. Silks, wools, cotton, and their blends make wonderful fibers to work with.

You may not see yarns from nylon, acrylic, or polyester, but you will see high end brands like Noro, Debbie Bliss, and more. We will also carry yarn made from organic fibers and are working to find spinners and dyers who would like to sell their natural fiber yarns as well.

To start we will carry some great new yarns and some favorites like:
  • Noro
  • Louisa Harding
  • Sirdar
  • Juniper Moon Farm
  • Ella Rae
  • Debbie Bliss
We will do everything we can to provide excellent customer service, support for your projects, and a welcoming environment for yarn lovers everywhere. All the comforts of your local yarn shop without having to leave your home.

If you do love the atmosphere of your local yarn shop, don't worry!  My goal for Midwest Yarn is to also open a brick-and-mortar shop as soon as possible.  Until we reach that goal, check out what we have to offer and let us know how we're doing.

I will be using this blog to support other knitters and their projects, keep you updated with what's going on with our store, and offer you special deals.  For now, make sure you follow our blog.  Ravelry group (Friends of Midwest Yarn), blog, Facebook page, or Twitter (@midwestyarn) followers receive a 10% discount - more details to follow.

GRAND OPENING SPECIAL:

AWOL

I've been trying to organize my thoughts for a blog post (and instead tinkered with the lay out....what do ya'll think?  If I could just figure out how to center the top photo...)  and have had as much luck as I have had trying to organize my life!  The last few months have been crazy and disjointed.

Greg has started his new job in Fredericksburg, and is very happy.  He's in a sweet rental in town, on the river and just 10 minutes from work! We had a mover bring him the essentials, bought a new bed and a new recliner.  And now over the last few months I've taken load after load of boxes, (and a loom and fiber...and guitars and amps....) just trying to declutter our house to put it on the market.  How can two people have so much???  It's not Layla.  Her one box of toys is very compact.

While visiting Greg in Fredericksburg I make sure to spend time in my new studio at LibertyTown.

It feels good to be back, surrounded by friends and so much support, ideas always in the air and shoppers too. :) As you can see I've moved my largest loom into the studio. I always plan to sit down to work and never seem to get to it. Setting up at LibertyTown comes with an attendance requirement. So my plan is to get alot more weaving done in the coming year! I'll sell my pottery here too. But still throw pots in a home studio....wherever that might be. Clay just needs so much babysitting.  What I am doing now requires so many steps it's wonderful to have my clay just steps away, to have space for pots in different phases and the ability to fire my own kiln.

While in Charlottesville I am working hard to pack and declutter and update. Our kitchen is so tiny we thought some simple improvements would help a prospective buyer to BECOME a buyer.  So the old countertops were replaced with a newer and more "hip" color (then the wood look alike formica) and now we have a dishwasher!  Of course it was not without it's issues.  The FIRST countertop was delivered in a pouring rain....I did not notice that it was cut a mirror image of what is was meant to be.  And then, of course, there was the VERY dead rat....

I plan to spend this week CLEANING and packing away odds and ends...oh, and shredding the 5 boxes of old credit card bills and cancelled checks that date back to 1989!  (4 large garbage bags and counting...you can't be too careful these days...) I may make my self imposed deadline of February 1 to get this house on the market yet....

Know anyone looking to move to Charlottesville?  Three bedrooms, 3 full baths, big fenced yard and a beautiful studio with AC and heat all located within walking distance of the Charlottesville Music Scene!  And no rats.

Of course I've managed a few trips to Juniper Moon Farm, usually with the excuse of dropping off pots or picking up my own farm product. Some of their beautiful mill spun cormo and FRESH EGGS. They are so beautiful!

Susie bought these calves recently off Craigslist!  Another step towards keeping down the sheep and goat parasites....and they are awfully damn cute. Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.

It's been a struggle to make time to throw pots.  First there were The Holidays. Plus when I'm here it is only for a few days at a time and I'm working on the house. And I've not been able to focus.  But now I have a deadline, Empty Bowls in Frederickburg  this Saturday.  I have been working on bowls, a project for a friend in Vermont (more on that later!) and a couple of commissions picked up through the Fall Fiber Festival show I did last year in October.   Tomorrow morning I will load a bisque, aiming to be unloading and packing a glaze by Thursday night.

I surely miss having my hands in clay!  It's so much calmer then the chaos in the house.  I worry about what the year has to hold for me studio wise.  I've come to the conclusion that once the house is on the market the hardest work will be done.  I will just concentrate on keeping it clean (!) and throwing pots.  The more I can pack away the better.  I am doing one show for sure in October and am debating a second one in September....But once the house sells (please God sooner then later) I can't be sure how long I will be without access to a studio to fire my cone 5 pots.....worry, worry, worry.....

So there you have it!  On paper it does not seem like much.  But mix in a bit of lost motivation and a bit of overwhelmed What should I do first???? and it begins to look like more.

Thanks to all of you for sticking around....I hope to fill you in on things a little more often then just 1 time a month!

Now.  BED.
