Remembering Sept 11th…

(Sunday is the 15th anniversary of Sep 11th)

Let us always remember …

In Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey stands Empty Sky:New Jersey September 11th Memorial  This memorial is dedicated to New Jersey’s 749 innocent loved ones who lost their lives that day at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, PA.

From the Empty Sky website:  “Empty Sky” remembers those lost while simply and powerfully connecting New Jersey to Ground Zero. Twin walls transect a gently sloped mound anchored by a granite path that is directed toward Ground Zero. The length of each wall is exactly equal to one side of the former World Trade Center Towers as the height of the wall reflects proportion of the former buildings if they were lying on their side. . The seven hundred and forty nine (749) victims’ names from the State of New Jersey face one another on the interior elevations of the twin brushed stainless steel walls within easy reach. The walls channel visitors to the location in the Manhattan skyline where the former World Trade Center towers once stood.”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Opposites…

In the photo this week, show how opposites can tell a story about people, places, or objects.

I chose the The National Monument to the Forefathers — also known as the Pilgrim Monument in Plymouth, MA. The monument is topped by a 36-foot-tall statue of Faith, who alone weighs 180 tons. Surrounding statues include Liberty, Peace, Tyranny, Education, Wisdom, Youth, Law, Mercy, Justice, and Morality.

Here is the statue and four opposite sides… Education, Morality, Liberty, Law.

Memorial Day 2016 …

DSC_0190

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

Weekly Challenge: Landscape …

For this week’s challenge, share a photo of a landscape: a wide establishing shot of a scene in nature or an urban setting. Landscape photography is typically displayed in a horizontal orientation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have 3 choices for landscape.
A snippet of landscape through the door of a Martha’s Vineyard lighthouse…
Weekly Challenge: Circle …
The prompt for Circle …..With 2016 officially here, we face forward to take on what’s next. It’s a time of endings and beginnings, so I wanted a broad theme that could be simple, fun, and festive, but also complex and introspective. And so, circle it is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My choice for the topic Circle… is Stonehenge which is located in southern England, it is comprised of roughly 100 massive upright stones placed in a circular layout.  For centuries, historians and archaeologists have puzzled over the many mysteries of Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument that took Neolithic builders an estimated 1,500 years to erect. CLICK HERE to learn more about Stonehenge which I found to be very interesting.

Part 4 of our trip..

This is the National Monument to the Forefathers

The monument lists the names of the Mayflower Pilgrims and also on the four buttresses are seated figures emblematical of the principles upon which the Pilgrims founded their Commonwealth; Morality, Law, Education and Liberty.

According to Wikipedia : {The National Monument to the Forefathers, formerly known as the Pilgrim Monument, commemorates the Mayflower Pilgrims

The nation’s oldest continuously operating public museum, Pilgrim Hall Museum houses an unmatched collection of Pilgrim possessions telling the story of brave and determined men and women building lives and homes for themselves and their children in a new world. See William Bradford’s Bible, Myles Standish’s sword, the only portrait of a Pilgrim (Edward Winslow) painted from life, the cradle of New England’s first–born, Peregrine White, the great chair of William Brewster, and the earliest sampler made in America, embroidered by Myles Standish’s daughter.

The only thing we were allowed to photograph were these beautiful stained glass windows

Memorial Day 2015 …

Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

 Take a moment to remember the original reason for Memorial Day and the men and women who gave their lives for our country.

Have a great Memorial Day and enjoy the weekend whatever you’re doing.
