Snow!

We finally had a little snow last night.  IF my shovel and broom weren't packed away somewhere it would be easy to clear walks and the car. But a MOP had to suffice....

(If you look closely you can see it leaning next to the door.)

Killer Bunny is our snow gauge.  (He's about 2 feet high.)

Tracey's talk of weaving pushed me to get to the studio and work on my latest wool blanket.  I work in stages to save my back.  It is nice to finish all the warping one day, so that you can walk in and just start weaving the next.....very satisfying.

It's going pretty quickly with this simple pattern.  I will probably be painting at the house but hope to finish  this over the weekend.  Greg is driving to Florida for a week of "work" so I will have only Layla to give me a schedule!

Sunflower Skeletons on a Snowy Day

I am not a spectacular photographer by any means, but I work and live in a truly beautiful place. The Kansas Historical Society, location of my day job, is on the edge of town, and we are lucky enough to have prairie reserve as part of our property. We have hiking trails that wind through the prairie, sometime surrounding the hiker in grasses and sunflowers seven or eight feet high. It has taken me six months to remember to bring my camera to work and take some pictures during my lunch-break walk. But it’s good that I remembered today, because we are getting the perfect “White Christmas” snow right now. (It’s a week late, but I’ll take it.)

In August, these were all sunflowers in full bloom. (And it was 110 degrees, so I was not outside much)

Happy New Year everyone! I hope it’s a good start for you all.

The New Path is Snowy and Icy

Hello...did you thik I'd wandered off never to reappear? Nope. Did you wonder if I had gotten bored with retirement? Nope.

I've survived the Christmas Blizzard of 2009..truly it was one. And I'm sure there are photos of it somewhere on this computer but I don't think any were spectacular.

Another storm arrived on Thursday. Freezing rain and sleet for much of that day and evening with snow following on Friday. I am grateful beyond belief that we didn't lose power but it's gonna be a long time before I'm able to move my car. I cleared the steps yesterday and it took most of the afternoon. An inch of ice on the top of the vehicle and then that was topped with 6 inches of snow! Although it was cold yesterday, there was sun and 'they' said it would be sunny today in the 40s. Well they forecasted the storm almost perfectly but they missed on this one. It's gray and cold. And last night we had something called 'freezing fog'. Maybe it's still here.

Since I was going to have to put on boots and Yaktrax to go get the paper, I decided to stomp around the neighborhood. It's sooo weird to hear ice cracking somewhere under your feet.

I'm not sure if the following photos are a result of freezing fog, if it's hoarfrost or what. And the icicyles are sooo pretty. But in the cold outside with no people, no vehicles, no sound..it's quite magical.
