These are not fast squares to sew but they are a lot of fun! There’s a lot of cutting and trimming involved so they start off really slow and then finish up fast. I also had a chance to make some soy candles for Daniel. I added half an ounce of scent per pound of wax and learned to let the wax melt thoroughly before pouring. I used paper plates with holes in the middle to keep my wicks centered as the candles cooled. They turned out pretty nicely!

Block of the Month: October

zig zag, jig jog

Farmer’s Wife blocks are waiting patiently while I knock out another deadline project. This quilt is based on the tutorial given here but I’ve gone with a full assortment of colors rather than alternating with a solid which gives zig zag every row. It works up very quickly and I”ll soon be ready to pin after a bit of trimming up.

Block of the Month: September

Picking up speed

I’m slowly learning ways to streamline the Farmer’s Wife block making process. I select fabric for several blocks and iron it in layers in a big stack on the ironing board (iron one at a time as you add it to the stack). I also mark my templates so that they share a cutting line which makes cutting go faster. Speaking of cutting, I got these new little Fiskars after seeing a fancy precision cutting demo at the quilt show but they are so tight they made a bruise on my finger. I loosened the screw just a tiny bit and now they feel much better.

Outward bound

I took my quilt to the shop where they helped me choose a binding fabric. In the outer border I quilted long squiggles that look a bit like seagrass to me. A run through the washer and dryer improved things a good bit and I was relieved there wasn’t any color bleed from the hand-dyed fabrics. It’s off in the mail now where I hope it will arrive before birthday celebrations ensue.

Waves

There are “wave” blocks to go along with the turtle blocks in the quilt I”m working on. I’ve quilting these “waves” before when I made a snail’s trail quilt and I made the same initial mistakes as last time. I think, in future, I need to write the color names on the foundation paper. I can’t remember what method I used for the snail’s trail quilt but the centers came out nicer so I need to keep that in mind should I use this block pattern again. The wave blocks are slower going so they’ll take a little while to work through before I can piece the top of the quilt.
