So where did November go?

bittersweet vine

Since I still hadn't decided if I was tired of listening to my inane drivel and seeing my same pictures over and over again here in my little corner of the internet, I decided I must not be, and that I would just keep plugging away.

Things have been... What's a nice word for, "Lydia is getting a good jump on the terrible twos and is practically unbearable to be around one moment and full of heart-melting amazingness the next?" Then there's the trying to keep up with all the boys' school stuff, and bill stuff, and money worries, and worry worries, and me getting overwhelmed (shock!) and questioning every major life decision I've ever made, and all the while continuing on my never-ending and seemingly fruitless quest for better mental health -- well, somehow we keep on doing our thing, and each day fades into the night without any major damage.

So really, the word I am looking for is just "life."

The Shepherd

So there I am. Wandering around my increasingly dormant back yard, and knitting. Always knitting. Well, when I'm not tearing through some exciting house project (hint: no more carpet in the upstairs hallway or on the stairs).

The Shepherd

But yeah, mostly a lot of knitting.

My Perpetual Blogging Vacation

quiet moment

Long time no see. Again.

I can't seem to decide if I am still a blogger or not. For the past few months, I have been mostly "not," but I have been knitting.

This sweater (Bláithín, by Kate Davies), was blogged about in six different posts on the Juniper Moon Farm blog and finished promptly (for me anyway). I was very pleased with it, but had quite a shock when it was featured on the front page of Ravelry for a few days with a group of incredibly lovely sweaters. If that burst of excitement didn't further fuel my current knitting frenzy, then I don't know what did. Because certainly it couldn't be my natural and unfortunate tendency to do, oh, everything obsessively...

My sweater (HowdyPandowdy's Woolen Blaithin) was featured on the front page of Ravelry!

With that project completed, it was time to back up a little and finally dive into the two beauties from The Shepherd and the Shearer.

(That is Mr. Ambry's and my queen size bed, just to give you an idea of how much yarn is all laid out there.)

As I already have a cabled pullover in a natural white, I decided to use the lighter yarn for my Shepherd hoodie.

I started the Shepherd first and haven't had a ton of time for it, but it's creeping along.

Another almost completed work in progress is a Bláithín (junior) for Lydia, although I made it in a larger size to use up the rest of the white yarn, so it may not fit her this year.

And for the times I need something a little simpler to work on, a Charlie pullover for Lydia.

That's about it. I knit when I can grab a few minutes between Lydia wrangling and attempting to complete the necessary housework. Out of all the things I like to do, knitting is probably the easiest to pick up and put down with a million interruptions.

So for now: knitting. And maybe blogging. Or maybe not. Guess we'll find out. ;)

Chive Blossom Vinegar { Updated }

chive blossom vinegar - 6

I'm always one to finally jump on internet bandwagons a good year or so after I first see them making their rounds, and this small foray into infused vinegar is no exception.

While I'd like to show some self-restraint and refrain from sharing my versions of pictures that already exist a hundred times over elsewhere on the web, I decided eh, why start controlling myself now? So here they are.

chive blossom vinegar - 1

What I did was just pinch blossoms off my plant and my neighbor's with my thumb nail and stuck them in a large mason jar.

chive blossom vinegar - 2

I filled it with cold water and gave it a good long soak, then a shake, then drained it and repeated that whole process two more times to make sure all the dirt and bugs were out (or at least most of them, yanno?)

chive blossom vinegar - 3

I laid them all out to dry for a few hours, occasionally stopping by to toss them around a bit to knock some water droplets out of all those little petals.

chive blossom vinegar - 4

Once they were sufficiently dry, I stuck them in a jar and poured a splash of apple cider vinegar over them, and then filled the jar the rest of the way with white vinegar. Two things: Mine won't be as "pretty pink" as some others online due to my addition of cider vinegar, but it will taste more like I want it to. And also, some people heated their vinegar, others put it in at room temp, all were successful. So I decided to put mine in as is and stick it in a sunny window for a day or two before I pop it in the basement for the next week or so.

chive blossom vinegar - 5

It already looks and smells so lovely, I can hardly wait to find out how nice it will be after it sits a while!

Tomorrow's project: Rose and Cardamom Jelly. Cross your fingers. My jelly record is less than stellar...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Impatient Amber should have just waited to post until this morning so I could share this picture of it after a night of steeping. Pinkness! Smells great.

The next day...

Rambling, Kids, and a New Grill

I have that quilt-y feeling coming on.

Not much new here yet, although the pile of fabric above will soon become a small quilt for Lydia.

yet another new project...

Projects, projects. Always. I just replaced out bathroom sink last weekend and I am so pleased with it. But other than that, big house projects have mostly been on hold for while and I've been focusing on a lot of smaller items. I finally finished up my Harvest Moon cardigan, and have I remembered to take a picture of it yet? No! Must do that tomorrow. It turned out really nicely and thanks to some cooler weather, I've gotten to wear it several times already.

But back to Lydia: She will be a year old in exactly three weeks, if you can believe it.

shhhhhh

She is amazingly funny and lovable, and so clever. Just genuinely a pleasure to be around (you know, except for those whiny, teething days). ;)

no I will not make out with you!

And one of the best parts? She LOVES being outside.

4-24

Any kind of weather, doesn't matter. She is just so, so happy to be out there. What a treat to have a baby who doesn't hate the cold, wind, rain, or bright sun! How wonderful to just sit her down on the grass and watch her eagerly grab for dandelions, or delicately pinch off a single blade of grass just to turn it over and over in her hands, so intently.

Today was a day of working in the yard, and she was in her element out there. Well really, I was too. Just 70º in the sun and a cool breeze, clear blue skies in every direction, and everything alive again... Perfection.

To top off our lovely day, we enjoyed our second outside meal of the season, made especially wonderful by our brand new grill. (Well, I bought it a few months ago, but it's just getting fired up now.)

Just love it.

The enclosure is a work in progress, but I am pleased with the temporary digs. They keep the wind out and the heat in enough for now, and that's a good thing.

I'll never own a gas grill again

Love it. I got myself a chimney starter so we're not using any lighter fluids or chemical-drenched briquettes -- just boring ol' charcoal and wood, and I like boring.

mmmmm, wieners

And of course,

the boys and their marshmallows

mmmmm, toasty

ooh boy!

yum

It almost seemed like too much to ask for, but we even got a nice sunset out of this pretty much perfect day.
lovely sunset

I'm hoping to actually remember to take my sweater pictures, and maybe even have some quilt progress to show by next week. Have a great weekend!

I just don’t know…

some sneaky mums behind the false indigo

I feel like I'm always playing catch-up over here, because, well, I'm always playing catch-up over here.

So in no particular order, here's some stuff we've been up to.

We had our first frost of the season on the 13th,

I cobbled together something special for convenient backpack storage out of an old green board I found in our basement when we moved in, and some new lumber and hooks:

Almost done!

Still doing some detail work on the letters, but it is already a much loved addition to the dining room!

In family news, I did my first ever 5K walk (with a special walking partner!) while John did the 10K run,

yay! let's go for a long walk together!

super weekend of outside fun

super weekend of outside fun

22 weeks

I'm also in the process of "sprucing up" my loom and hoping to do some more weaving soon. For now though, just testing, testing...

testing the loom with the new heddles

There really are some soapy things in the works, including a whipped soap tutorial, and testing a soap kit from my favorite supplier, but the detailed stuff is proving to be painfully difficult with a small one in the house again, so you'll just have to be a teensy bit patient with me.

And for now, that's all she wrote.

A little blog freshening-up

This is one of those annoying posts where I ramble on about who-knows-what in between unrelated pictures, 'kay?

I thought to myself the other day that it was probably time for a new header, so there's one up there. I am really very pleased with the new look.

7

Then I ended up getting rid of most of what I had in the sidebar because I decided to try the tabs thing.

8

9

I really like the tabs, and had been thinking about trying them for a while now.

9/12

Two boys.

hi!

But that's not why I switched to tabs. You see, I made this:

Chai Latte sneak preview

That's whipped soap. Soap! And it is just the start of my slow and steady rebuilding of my soapy empire. So check out the "Soap" tab up top and tune in periodically to see what's on the curing racks. And for the utmost in soapy viewing pleasure, I made a little slideshow of some of my favorite soaps. It plays nonstop, forever, so pop in anytime.

More on the whipped soap soon!

Everything again?

 rudbeckia explosion

Can't seem to get enough of one sort of thing done around here to have a post that makes sense, so here's everything I guess.

 first harvest

That was my first "pesto garden" harvest a while back. My Memmy gave me a still-in-the-box food processor that she never used (her old one is still kickin' and then somebody gave her this one for whatever reason and it just sat around). Anyway, what? Oh yeah. I chopped up those piles of goodness and smooshed them into a little bitty container and stuck them in the freezer.

And now I'm ready to do it all over again.

herbs

I just wish my 'maters were as fruitful (literally).

tomatoes

They got nice and big, but are just now really blossoming and I've had very little fruit so far.

Ah well. At least we've been finally getting a little rain here and there.

rainbow

Our area was/is not in drought, but it still had been so dry for so long.

A nice thing:

real eggs

Even though we are not allowed to keep chickens in our borough (and honestly? I don't have the energy or money for them at this point in my life anyway), we have plenty of local sources for fresh eggs, and my neighbor Linda surprised me with a dozen the other week. Of course, we had already devoured half of them before I managed to get a picture.

Now. Remember this?

the $20 former kitchen hutch is slowly getting a makeover

I finally picked a paint color and put a better back on it:

$20 hutch - finally repainted

$20 hutch - finally repainted

Hooray! Now I love it again!

And speaking of loving things again... The mystery shawl from my last post? It got weird.

mystery shawl progress

It's hard to explain -- no wait, let me rephrase this. It's actually very easy to explain, and at some length too, but I will not bore you. Basically, the design of the shawl in the second clue proved to be something that I feel does not benefit from a self striping yarn and is much better served by a solid, tweed, or very slightly variegated yarn instead.

Luckily, I had these already on hand.

new yarns for mystery shawl

The brown and tan is undyed alpaca from Ideuma Creek (the ball's worth was purchased at Rhinebeck and the two cakes were purchased online much later), and the white is Juniper Moon Farm cormo that I grabbed on sale a few months back. They are both so soft! And knitting up beautifully together.

"Wool-paca-feller"

Because the pattern name is "Rockefeller" and my yarns are now alpaca and wool, I have dubbed mine, "Wool-paca-feller." ... Isn't it sad that I amuse myself so.

Now some cute things:

the whole family: dashboard version

A few years ago, my friend gave me the Little Miss figurine on the far left for no particular reason except that she was cute. After a while, I got the bright idea to affix her to my dashboard with a little adhesive square; sort of a fun little mascot for our trips. Fast forward a bit and the same friend sent me the pipe smoking bobble headed Pappy in the center, so I stuck him up there too, joking that the little figures were Mr. Ambry and me. This fabulous idea then sent me on a quest to find figures to represent the kids too.

A little while after that, my friend Michele sent us some wonderful baby gifts and just happened to stick that little Kewpie doll on the outside of the package, and I practically bolted out to the car to stick it in its place. All I needed were the boys and after several failed attempts to find the Blockheads from Gumby in an appropriate size, I settled on Mario and Luigi. Even though I am not a gamer, the boys love them, so that's that.

And now, every time we get in the car we have to smile at our little dashboard family up there. :)

Also cute was this terrified leaf friend that John found outside the other day:

Oh noes! :0

Still with me?

I am going to attempt to pickle some things this week. I have dabbled in canning in the past, but not much, and I have never pickled, so this might prove to be horrible. Or not. We'll see.

pickling spices

I mixed coriander, allspice, cloves, turmeric, celery seed, yellow mustard seeds, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and mixed peppercorns in there and it smells quite delightful. I have a bunch of dill in the freezer and must grab some garlic, and then I can do half batches of each item in spice blend thinger and also in garlicky dill.

Believe it or not, I could keep talking indefinitely, but I have decided to cut myself off here. Cross your fingers for cooler weather so I can get up in the attic really soon and have a real project to share again!

I hate to say, "I have nothing to say," but…

I always think I don't when I start a post like this.

But then, as usual, I am lying. I have a thousand million and one things to say. Like, Opinions! with capital Os and possibly numerous exclamation points.

Opinions! on handmade, and how much is enough/too much, and at what point one should cool the heck down and give themselves permission to not do everything. Along with that, there are the Opinions!! on DIY, and how, frankly, some of it gets a bit ridiculous and ends up wasting so much time and energy it is not actually worth your while, you know?

There are BIG Opinions!!! on starting to raise a daughter, and the new fears and ideas and methods swirling around in my head, and how all of this brings up so many fears and questions about how I've raised my boys thus far, and how I will continue in the future.

Here's the thing. As much as I really enjoy hearing myself spew out revelations like that navel-gazing, early 20s depressive who just finished an elective psych course (what? we all have our awkward stages...), I think I'll pass this time.

The most important things: I want to live my life as freely as I can. I want to be happy. I want to raise my kids as competently as possible, and I would like to have a sturdy roof over our heads, and plenty of food in our bellies. Whatever choices I make to get us there are mine to make, and mine alone. None of us should have to justify decisions we make for the good of our families, but we all feel that we must more often than not, especially in this age of social media. We have a LOT to measure up to nowadays. We hear and see what our peers are doing at all times. We have constant access to the creations and even homes of those we admire. And you know what? It gets to be too much. I stepped away from Pinterest these past few weeks because it made me hate almost every photograph I have ever taken. It made me feel like the laziest slacker of a gardener/homemaker/wife/mother -- you name it, I probably am pretty lousy at it when measured up to all those lovely pins.

When measured. I needed to step back and stop comparing for a little so I could learn to love and admire me again.

And that's that.

But you know? I'd be remiss in my obsessed mom duties if I were to leave without some current pictures of the littlest one...

Next up is probably a boring knitting post, so get yourselves all geared up for no excitement there!
