Fall Fiber Festival Weekend!

This weekend is show number 2 for me.  Fall Fiber Festival near Montpelier (James Madison's home) outside Orange, VA.

Dog Trials!
Organic Donuts!
Shearing Demos!
Lots of woolly goodness,

And my pots of course.

I'll be in tent II  (4-II when you look at the map below) space #8.  The same tent as usual but I have moved across to the other side to make way for a vendor that wanted a double space.

The weather has actually begun to look promising.  Cooler temperatures and some clouds but no rain!

See you there!

What a Summer

I can't believe how quickly this Summer has just flown by.  There were even very few unbearable days.  And this is Virginia!  So I can't blame the heat on my lethargy.  I tried my best to get into the studio (or update this blog), but a good book, or our spartan garden or the couch seemed to continually call my name.  While Greg has worked like a dog every day both at work and still healing from his January knee injury (thank goodness for physical therapy he is now doing stairs again!) I have been busy trying to heal my heart.  You see, I lost my dear Dad to lung cancer in May.  For some people heart break raises a need to sink into clay, or paint, or paper or whatever creative outlet does the trick.  I have now, unfortunately, discovered that my creativity abandons me all together.

(My Dad working at the archaeological field school in Popham, Maine)

But.  Life continues to swirl and race around me.  Our old dog Layla nudges me to take her for her short walk every morning...(and she sheds like crazy so vacuuming has to happen) the farmers market calls me to buy all the luscious greens and veggies of summer (so healthier cooking is happening) and finally the tears are less and the paralysis has given way to a push to get stocked up for my two big Fall shows.

So despite the lack of posting I have slowly begun weaving again.

And getting my hands dirty in clay.

Two weekend shows in a row, where I sell quite a few pots requires a lot of preparation.  So the shelves are full of  pots in all stages.  And just yesterday was my last "wet day" of work.  All I have left to do is draw and fire.  And maybe warp another loom to squeeze in one more project?

If you are near by....Shenandoah Fiber Festival is September 27 and 28 in Berryville, VA.  Fall Fiber Festival (which includes the not to be missed opportunity to see competitive sheep dog trials) is the following weekend near Orange VA October 4 and 5.

Stop by and say hi!

Counting Down!

I'm determined to have all the sloppy wet work done by the end of this week.  That will give me two weeks to slip, decorate and double fire the work to be ready for Shenandoah Fiber Festival weekend.  I can manage to fire a bisque and 1 glaze between Shenandoah....and Fall Fiber Festival.  Working, working, working......

Greenware.  These need to be glaze fired by the end of next week for the gallery in Sperryville....

Some finished work.....

(If you don't already know, goats LOVE climbing things...)

Inventory!!!

Just Pots

I am working away to stock up for my two biggest shows of the year.  September 28 and 29 is the Shenandoah Fiber Festival and October 5 and 6 is Fall Fiber Festival.  Shenandoah is a new one for me and yes, these shows are two weekends in a row.  I am still wondering if I am crazy.  I know there are artists out there that do an amazing number of shows each year, weekend after weekend, but I am not what you would call a "production potter".  So only trying it will tell!

Somehow the dates have creeped up on me.  We had a family gathering a couple of weekends ago for my Dad's 80th birthday and it seems, despite the event only being one day, that I was more distracted by the thought of 14 extra people in our small house then I thought....so now I am working frantically to throw, throw, THROW.  And I have sheep, alpaca and goats swirling in my brain!

AND I finally fired the glaze kiln full of all those piggies and cows I posted about earlier.  Sometimes it just seems to take awhile to gather a full kiln load.  (Mine is 7 cubic feet if you were curious.  Not too big, and not too small....)  I am happy with all the results.

So now I keep my fingers crossed that my back will continue to behave and that the Kiln Gods continue to cooperate!

The next load drying.....

It’s all about the shows…..

I can't believe we are already half way through October.  OCTOBER.  Fall is truly here.  The rains continue, the leaves are turning and the breezes have brought us those chilly nights I love so much.  Along with October comes a restocked Etsy Shop, Fall Fiber Festival, the Fredericksburg Spinners and Weavers Guild's "Stitch In", the start to Greg's new job and Fall Shearing at Juniper Moon Farm.

Greg armed with The Square ready for big sales!

Fall Fiber Festival was a great success!  Despite the week of rain, the crew managed to find enough dry land to set up the tents, no one got stuck in the mud and sales were GREAT.  Last year was the first year that the board accepted pottery vendors to the mix.  I jumped at the chance to be part of a festival that I have attended for YEARS and was so happy to be accepted.  The festival is ALWAYS well attended.  It is a date reserved a year in advance by most every fiberista in Virginia and the plan is nearly always to SHOP.

The weather cooperated, being cool and a bit breezy Saturday and, well, overcast on Sunday but NO RAIN.  To make the weekend even better my friend April came up from NC to lend a hand.  So with Greg taking money and April helping me set up I had lots of time to talk with customers.  It was an awesome weekend.  As I said, sales were great (even sold several of my woven towels) and I picked up a couple of easy commissions (more of what I already do) and some wholesale opportunities.  VERY satisfying.  I tell ya.  Fiber people are just the friendliest bunch.

The following Saturday I packed up the truck and drove to Fredericksburg for the FSWG Stitch In event being held at  LibertyTown Arts Workshop (my alma mater!).  This was a charity knitting and crocheting event.  Well attended the goal of the day was to promote charitable knitting (and crocheting) for the homeless, hospital patients and others.  There were demos, short classes and donated yarn and needles to get you started.  A small group of us agreed to be vendors.

Me!

If I'm not going to knit with it I may as well sell my handspun so someone else can!

Baskets of donated yarns!

Nekkid bears waiting for clothes....

All dressed and ready for policemen to give to kids...
My friend Lisa from Maranatha Alpaca Farm

I rushed home Saturday to get home before dark and to help Greg pack up for his move to Fredericksburg on Sunday.  Ya'll will be glad to know that he is tucked into his temporay place and has since finished his first very busy week of work.  He's happy!  BUT this apart stuff is not too fun.

My sights are now set on the list of things that must be accomplished here at the house in C'ville to ready it for sale in the Spring.  Painting, (I put up a new light fixture today!) a kitchen update, bathroom heat....with time for throwing pots in between.

I have decided to take a studio at LibertyTown again starting in November.  This will hold my largest loom and lots of pots!  I plan on continuing to throw in a home studio.  I love the control of my time and the kiln.  And by spending time at LT I will still have access to tons of creative energy.  Greg will move into a small rental house in November that allows dogs so Layla the wonder dog and I will be spending some time each week in The Burg starting in November.  It will take some planning to balance my time between my pottery studio at the house in C'ville, and Greg and LT in Fredericksburg.

Here's hoping for a quick sale of the house in the Spring.....

5 days and counting…..

Yikes!  Fall Fiber Festival is this coming Saturday and Sunday.  I have one more bisque and one (!) more glaze firing to accomplish.  AND THINGS AREN'T DRYING.  Its been SO rainy and wet here in Virginia....The last few pots are just to round out the selection so I could just do one more glaze firing and call it finished.  BUT I want these large plates to be at the party.....(IF they don't warp....)

So I may just break down and lower the AC in the studio and cross my fingers.
