Works in progress

I have been letting far too much time go by between posts, but I never feel like I should share stuff when it's less than halfway done, you know? But today I am bucking that trend and sharing three unfinished projects at once. Three! Can you even stand the excitement right now? Yeah, I didn't think so.

First up is something I have hated for a long time: our carpeted stairs.

In fact, I hated them so much, I apparently did not include them in photos unless I had no choice, so incidentally modeling several of the stairs in this shot from last summer are Ethan and his first marionette, Zucchini Man,

Ethan and Zucchini Man, posing on the carpet that was

And the whole staircase, newly without carpet (but with a fresh coat of paint on the risers),

nekkid!

Lydia, doing her best Vanna, wanted us to see every luxurious, shaggy detail in this months-old photo,

Lydia Vannas us the luxurious, shaggy texture

And now mercifully bare, you can see where there was once a runner down the center, but that will be easy enough to even out (I'm waiting for Spring though, so I don't poison us all with varnish fumes).

needs the color evened out, but still pretty nice!

So that's one unfinished project. You should have SEEN the dust under the padding. Horrifying. So glad it's gone.

Next up is the dining room I've never been happy with. When we bought the house four years ago, the dining room was a really interesting combination of avocado green on top, and sage green on the bottom, as seen in the before part of this "old" before&after thinger:

dining room before and after

The colors looked nice after that, even though pinky curtains aren't really my thing...

new dining room colors

But the sage green is also the color of the entire living room, and it seemed sort of redundant to have it in two rooms right next to each other. So when I scored some exciting red paint on super clearance on a rare trip to a certain W word store, I was beyond thrilled!

new color on lid

It actually looked really nice at first,

star side after

And when I was able to afford new curtains, it looked even nicer,

dining room rearranged - other side

... in photos. In real life, it was dark and small, and the red paint got this weird faded look/possible film on it in places, and the upper half of the walls always had a greenish cast to them, as if the avocado was peeking through. CRAZY MAKING, especially sitting in there in the evenings in the artificial light, but I couldn't bring myself to paint again so soon, you know?

Until recently, when inspiration (and free white paint) struck, and my hand was forced,

repainting the dining room, yet again

After three freaking coats of primer and two coats of actual white wall paint (all on the bottom half), the weirdo red was gone for good. Then the yellow began to transform the top. I was scared, because yellow paint sometimes can be so awful and go so very wrong(scroll down for the yellow story), but hey, guess what? It turned out beautifully, and is exactly what we were going for.

repainting the dining room, yet again

I have since hung the curtains and some of the stuff is back on the walls, but I still have some putting away to do and finished pictures to take. But we are very happy with it. Much warmer and cozier, and no longer so dark and dingy looking.

NOW THEN. That project inspired the next thing I am going to share, because while this is something I have wanted to make for a long time, it probably would not have been started today had I not glanced at a bare part of the dining room wall and had an "Aha!" moment.

DIY silhouette bandwagon, I am on you!

I should perhaps pause here to explain that Lydia's picture (next up) is a composite of three images, simply because she is 19 months old and incapable of sitting still long enough for my increasingly slow camera to capture her correctly. It looks creepy like this, but it looked creepier with my severed fingers all over her neck and head, trust me on that one.

lydia (composite)

And because it is always interesting to compare the appearances of siblings and search for similarities, here they are together:

As soon as I have the money for three 11 x 14 black frames probably matted to 8 x 10 openings (unless I change my mind at some point), I plan on having these digital templates printed and having a go at cutting. I hope I can make it through all three kids without losing patience. I am not, uh, the best at paper cutting, so we'll see how it goes... But if I succeed, they will be framed individually and hung side by side in the dining room, and I can't wait!

But because I can't ever do anything nice and leave it that way, here is the silhouette I've done of myself.

amber silhouette

I can't wait to hang this one up somewhere special.

Shepherd again

This month has been a whirlwind of Christmas decorating, housecleaning/organizing (and subsequent donating of many unwanted items -- yay for less stuff in the house!), and knitting when I can squeeze it in.

This weekend is cookie baking time, so if anybody in this house isn't yet in the holiday spirit, the sugar overload ought to get them there...

But now I hear another closet calling to be emptied and sorted through, so I'll wish you Happy Holidays and be on my way for now!

Ramble, ramble. It’s what I do.

pie time!

Thought I was getting caught up here, but then my annual summer misery kicked in and I was forced into air conditioned hiding by so many 90º days.

Before the heat settled in, there was pie,

delicious, fresh strawberries

... which you don't get to see. It was ugly pie, but very delicious. I am not a gifted dessert maker, that is for sure. I can make all sorts of tasty things, but they all come out looking bedraggled if not extremely disadvantaged in some way. I am just not a big one on the fine details when it comes to something we will be immediately consuming. Or that is what I tell myself so I don't feel so bad when I fail again and again.

In not-ugly land, I made this Matilda cardigan for a friend's baby and just loved how it turned out.

Matilda cardigan

I'm making the same for Lydia in a different yarn and I just started binding off the bottom edge. I'm not positive I have enough yarn for the sleeves and the edging, so some fudging may occur. We'll see.

In other small thing cuteness, I ordered a Miss Maggie Rabbit kit from Alicia Paulson's shop somewhere around Lydia's birthday.

I'm glad you like your legs, Miss Maggie, but now it's time for bed

Miss Maggie has taken up knitting!

Lydia finally likes her bunny

I still haven't gotten around to the little boots yet, but I'll do them one of these days. And I have plans for a tiny apron too.

Miss Maggie's playing the banjo now

I noticed today that the marigold Ethan sprouted at school for Mother's Day is now taking over the windowsill, and that the candle jars really ought to be cleaned and put away for the summer, and that there is a giant goose feather I keep meaning to clean. Ah well. I can still sort of see the yard from there.

my Mother's Day plant from Ethan is taking over the windowsill

But anyway, look how hot is is. These are from today, and I'm sure one look at these pictures and you can feel me out there dying among my unhappy plants.

sad, limp raspberries

Sad.

not so exquisite looking blackberries

terrible, terrible blueberries

I looked at my one blueberry and was amazed to see BLUE berries on it, untouched by the birds! I wondered why they hadn't eaten all of these yet and popped one in my mouth and realized it's because birds are smart and these berries are total crap. Bitter, tiny, horrible little things with tough, extra bitter skin. But I had a chuckle, and I'm sure I'll be the subject of many little birds' dinner conversations tonight.

Wondering why the birds hadn't touched them, so I ate one. Yeah, they're crap.

But back to whatever I was working my way around to.

finally got one fenced

I finally got the gardens planted on the 22nd (I know, I know, but I moved them late and all that), and just last night finished some "fencing" for one of them. Tonight I'll finish the other if all goes well. I have a trellis project starting to go between them, so that'll be a thing soon.

Here's the layout,

late start

and I have leftovers of several of them for a fall planting, plus a few unopened ones tucked away.

a few for a fall planting

I ordered everything from High Mowing Seeds because what I've used from them in the past has just out-performed everything else in the garden. I even had some mixed lettuces that I let go to seed and *ahem* never got around to collecting them, so they planted themselves, survived the winter and three different diggings/dirt transfers, and STILL sprouted in the spring and gave me many salads worth of delicious mixed greens. They always say Vermonters are tough, and I guess that goes for their seeds too. ;)

But did I mention how hot it is?

Not, in fact, my giant head, but rather my new gardening hat.

Believe it or not, that perfect circle at the top of my shadow is not my huge alien bubble head. It is my first official gardening hat, and it is lovely (and under $15, win!)

new hat!

And with that, I will finally put the brakes on my unexpected burst of energy today. Expect too many garden pictures soon!

Yup, still high on spring, and some moving gardens.

lilacs in the rain

Oh, spring rain! It had been mostly sunny for so long, the rain was quite welcome.

peony party!

I just love rainy days so much.

mixed clematis

The plants liked it too of course. Check out that clematis only a few days later, now covered in blooms.

really blooming now!

But a big thing! The yard is changing yet again.

beds full now, and enjoying the rain

It started with finally deciding to plant the back fence and try to get the yard I actually want. You see, that one back section of fence opens, but we really don't need it to, and if the people who buy this place someday whenever we move away want it to open, they can cut down the plants back there, yeah? But I had been hesitating all this time because I felt I was being impractical? Something? I don't know. Basically I over-think everything ever and finally backed off of myself enough to just do what I want and enjoy our yard to the fullest.

So here's the gang:

grow, grow!

The blueberry bed used to be up at the other end of the yard, and the Knockout rose and Elderberry are also new, but the rest has been there for at least a season now.

But the real excitement comes in the form of two "brand new" vegetable beds. They don't look like much here, but they each measure about 72 x 36" and are about 11" high.

new beds!

Having them lower to the ground than the other bed means more critter potential, so I am working on some wire "fencing" to put in them, but my first attempt was a little... off...

well, the idea was there anyway

Haha, oh well. I'll fix it one of these days. :)

The lumber for the beds is all reclaimed from the original one I built up by the patio not long after we moved in.

raised bed planted and "fenced"

I liked it I guess, but the sun was all wrong there, so this year I finally got around to taking it apart. I cut up the wood for the new beds, and hauled all the dirt down the yard on tarps, with some help from the husband or course.

no more big raised bed up here

Impractical as it may seem, I liked having a division between the yard and the patio, and while I didn't feel the need for something as high as the original bed there, I didn't want to completely open it back up again.

Luckily for me, when I decided to extend the small deck in front of the shed so we could put the picnic table there, I found myself with a wheelbarrow full of lilies and irises in need of new homes. (And by the way, best place for the table yet. It used to be on the patio and then at the back of the yard where I just put those veggie beds but it works so much nicer here, and it sits in the shade of the tree!)

table under the tree now

So anyway, the now homeless plants joined some ranunculus and gladiolus bulbs, and some coleus seeds up here.

from left: lilies, gladiolus and ranunculus bulbs, irises, coleus seeds

Mulched and edged now, but still looking pretty bedraggled for the time being.

mulched and "edged" in the laziest way possible

Next up is a line of arborvitae along the fence behind the swingset, but who knows when we'll get them in. And then I suppose I ought to decide what to put in the new vegetable beds sometime before winter hits again. ;)

So that's that for now. Enjoy your weekend!

Rambling, Kids, and a New Grill

I have that quilt-y feeling coming on.

Not much new here yet, although the pile of fabric above will soon become a small quilt for Lydia.

yet another new project...

Projects, projects. Always. I just replaced out bathroom sink last weekend and I am so pleased with it. But other than that, big house projects have mostly been on hold for while and I've been focusing on a lot of smaller items. I finally finished up my Harvest Moon cardigan, and have I remembered to take a picture of it yet? No! Must do that tomorrow. It turned out really nicely and thanks to some cooler weather, I've gotten to wear it several times already.

But back to Lydia: She will be a year old in exactly three weeks, if you can believe it.

shhhhhh

She is amazingly funny and lovable, and so clever. Just genuinely a pleasure to be around (you know, except for those whiny, teething days). ;)

no I will not make out with you!

And one of the best parts? She LOVES being outside.

4-24

Any kind of weather, doesn't matter. She is just so, so happy to be out there. What a treat to have a baby who doesn't hate the cold, wind, rain, or bright sun! How wonderful to just sit her down on the grass and watch her eagerly grab for dandelions, or delicately pinch off a single blade of grass just to turn it over and over in her hands, so intently.

Today was a day of working in the yard, and she was in her element out there. Well really, I was too. Just 70º in the sun and a cool breeze, clear blue skies in every direction, and everything alive again... Perfection.

To top off our lovely day, we enjoyed our second outside meal of the season, made especially wonderful by our brand new grill. (Well, I bought it a few months ago, but it's just getting fired up now.)

Just love it.

The enclosure is a work in progress, but I am pleased with the temporary digs. They keep the wind out and the heat in enough for now, and that's a good thing.

I'll never own a gas grill again

Love it. I got myself a chimney starter so we're not using any lighter fluids or chemical-drenched briquettes -- just boring ol' charcoal and wood, and I like boring.

mmmmm, wieners

And of course,

the boys and their marshmallows

mmmmm, toasty

ooh boy!

yum

It almost seemed like too much to ask for, but we even got a nice sunset out of this pretty much perfect day.
lovely sunset

I'm hoping to actually remember to take my sweater pictures, and maybe even have some quilt progress to show by next week. Have a great weekend!

Regroup

I didn't intend to take a blogging break, but it happened. I just don't have anything new right now, and I worry about being too inane/repetitive all the time, so here I am. Or here I am not, I guess.

I have, as always, far too many projects in the works, but many of them are just not blog material.

There's been some knitting,

bff cowl progress

"Saroyan"

(In fact, there is a big knitting project in the works, but that will be a long time coming...)

There's been a whole lot of the non-garden variety growing,

And I kept forgetting to come share pictures of my neighbor's awesome vintage embroidery score, so here's a link to the whole set on Flickr.

Maybe the new year will bring some fresh new things (attic and basement projects, I'm looking at you!), but until then, perhaps I will lay low until that little blogging spark reignites. Thanks to all of you who have been with me for whatever amount of time. It's been a nice run.

Above all, enjoy your holidays!

t(h)rees

So, we had a hurricane.

orange!

Hurricane Sandy came barreling up the East Coast, turned left, and blew directly over us the other night. We were so very lucky to have almost no damage -- in fact, we never even lost power. Those around us were not so lucky at all, and my heart goes out to so many people right now who have many, many months of rebuilding ahead of them.

The rain was pretty heavy for a long time, and I was very grateful for my boots every time I had to pop outside for any reason because our yard was more than a little boggy feeling underfoot.

love my boots

The wind was terrifying (and we weren't even experiencing the absolute highest gusts the storm had to offer!) but high enough for me to never want to experience anything like it again.

The neighborhood trees lost most of their beautiful leaves, many of which came to visit our lonely Japanese maple leaves in our front yard (and some of which came inside to be admired too).

The morning after the worst of the storm had passed, the rain just kept on going all day.

Except maybe cookies...

trying a different cookie recipe

Tried this recipe, but left out the Nutella (bummer for me, I just can't handle super sweet stuff anymore). The verdict? Very, very good! I may never again not brown my butter in my cookie batter!

And finally, a very bright spot amidst all the rain and stormy weather:

As part of Bramble Berry's "Givember" promotion, I'll be reviewing their Sunshine Soap Kit and offering all of you a special coupon code for the month of November. AND I have a special surprise giveaway planned too. So some soapy fun is coming up in the next few days, stay tuned!

I just don’t know…

I'm also in the process of "sprucing up" my loom and hoping to do some more weaving soon. For now though, just testing, testing...

testing the loom with the new heddles

There really are some soapy things in the works, including a whipped soap tutorial, and testing a soap kit from my favorite supplier, but the detailed stuff is proving to be painfully difficult with a small one in the house again, so you'll just have to be a teensy bit patient with me.

And for now, that's all she wrote.

I really like the tabs, and had been thinking about trying them for a while now.

Two boys.

hi!

But that's not why I switched to tabs. You see, I made this:

That's whipped soap. Soap! And it is just the start of my slow and steady rebuilding of my soapy empire. So check out the "Soap" tab up top and tune in periodically to see what's on the curing racks. And for the utmost in soapy viewing pleasure, I made a little slideshow of some of my favorite soaps. It plays nonstop, forever, so pop in anytime.

More on the whipped soap soon!

Busy!

Family things and just generally existing have seemingly let me blow through several weeks here without even noticing.

The biggest thing would be my oldest gearing up for his first day of Kindergarten (more on this very soon, as the 27th is his first day!)

drapey and lovely

Still nowhere near done, but I think it will be a favorite when I finally finish!

The garden is huge and overgrown (but in a good way) and the tomatoes are still green but growing bigger by the minute. The basil is ready for a third cutting and smells so good when I even glance at it I could cry.

I have slowly started working in the attic again, now that the weather has finally started to cool off.

And a pile of studs waits in the basement to become the framework for some heavy duty shelving -- a HUGE step number one on my path of an organized home.

I have high hopes right now, I really do. By this time next year, I hope to have an attic studio for the grownups to utilize and enjoy, and for my basement storage system ideas to finally become reality.

And now I must force myself to sleep so I can see my biggest boy off in the morning. He is so excited, and we are too!
