Susie’s all spun up

IMG_0205 IMG_0211 IMG_0215 IMG_0216 IMG_0209

The shetland roving from Gilead Fiber Farm was a delight to spin up. It was probably the fastest yarn I’ve ever spun, start to finish. I filled two bobbins in an afternoon and plied it the next morning. It washed up brighter and stunningly lustrous and so very soft. I’m not sure what I’ll make with it but I definitely want to get some more. EDIT: I had two unlabeled rovings that I brought home from SPA and it seems this may actually be Varitek. Confirmation will come in a week when I visit the farm. This will be great news as there is plenty of Varitek left.

I never fail to come home from SPA ready to spin spin spin. This is some Shetland roving from miss Susie (the sheep) who is sweet as pie and much less shy after having a lamb last spring. Riley thinks Susie smells delightful!

Dye Trying

Emma's Yarn
I'm really looking forward to Saturday - not only is it our regular Third Saturday fiber get together at the Little Red Barn, but out under the shade trees, we'll be cooking up some scrumptious color in the dye pots.  Rita and Peggy HR have offered to help by bringing some turkey fryers and crock pots, so we should have no lack of ways to get color on your fiber.

Bring what you have to dye, or get some here - yarn or roving - and we'll play.  All the gorgeous yarns at Maryland Sheep and Wool have been haunting me in my sleep, and I'd really like to experiment with some fun color combinations myself.

The weatherman says it will be a warm sunny day, perfect for hanging out under the trees.  You might want to prepare for a few bugs... mosquitoes and chiggers have been documented here in the past couple of weeks.  I want you to be comfortable...

Looking ahead, remember we have our fleece skirting/washing workshop coming up on June 2, as well as an amazing double knitting workshop on June 9.  More details about those will be forthcoming.

See you Saturday!  10 AM to 3 PM...

Juicy Rovings and Giveaway Sweater

2/11/11 EDITED TO ADD: It's finished!

First - I finished the body of the sweater I am donating to Juniper Moon Farms massively huge most amazing giveaway ever in support of Pete's Greens:

I am really liking this sweater - basically I used the pattern "Faux Fair Isle Raglans" from Shannon Okey's book Spin to Knit: the Knitter's Guide to Yarn Making, but I added underarm gussets, and I think I added short-rows on the back of the neck so it would not ride up.... I'll have to double-check that bit!

Rovings! Dyed rovings!

Also - I dyed up four 4 oz chunks of roving, again the beautiful Cormo from Juniper Moon Farm- the first brownish grey was sort of a voo-do dyejob. I piled up the soaked fiber and randomly poured mixed red, blue and yellow dyes.

This next I am not so excited about, though the blues are nice, but it may spin up nicely:

This one I love! I painted two of the rovings the same and they are most juicy!
