Fear…

of heights and flying.

In 1988 we took a cruise that went to Alaska and one of the things I absolutely wanted to do was walk on a glacier but to do that I had to over come my fear of the above mentioned two things… heights and flying in helicopters.  But it was worth the angst and I would do it again.  The helicopter landed on the glacier and left us there for about a half hour to explore and take pictures. The glacier was bitter cold and we were fitted with heavy boots to keep our feet warm and jackets if we needed them.  We did.  When the helicopter came back for us it then flew us to the top of the Mendenhall glacier, what an awesome sight.

Photo A Day Challenge: Ice Blue…

This particular challenge prompted me to revisit pictures from a  cruise to Alaska in 1988. (I took pictures of the pictures so they might be a little grainy).

As the ship sailed into Glacier Bay a small fog bank lifted and there in front of us was Mendenhall Glacier.

You could hear the glacier groaning and moaning as it inched its way to the bay… the last picture is of ice and snow falling into the water.

One of my favorite pictures is from the helicopter flying over the glacier.

Winter Solstice 2018…

Ten years ago in 2008 my daughter Deb, her dog Chappy and I went to our first and only Winter Solstice party. We traveled to the Hudson Valley area of New York, not a long drive for us but a snowy, foggy, very wet one, outside.  Inside there was merriment and food and friends having a good time.

The solstice this year will be extra special because it will be followed the next day by a full moon known as the Cold Moon, and you might be able to see a meteor shower to boot. CLICK HERE to read more about this.

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Lift…

First thing that came to mind for ‘lift’ was elevator… this beautiful sort of art deco elevator is in the train station in Madison, NJ.

Before I knew it I was adding other lift pictures.  Like…

Morning lift to start the day…

This large, beautiful flag certainly needs help being lifted…

Need a lift?  This is one classy way to go.

And finally,  on one of the hottest days of the summer think ahead to this kind of lifting 🙂

Vineyard Februaries…

I’ve been to Martha’s Vineyard in February and I love it.  I love it any time but February is as different from summer on the Vineyard as you can possibly get.

There’s a  cold crispness in the air, the colors are more vivid, the Island is quiet and yet speaks volumes to those who take the time to look, listen and drink in the beauty and wonder that is the soul of Martha’s Vineyard.

February 1989…  a light dusting of snow made everything look like powdered sugar had fallen all over the Island.

February 1995… no snow that trip but bitter cold. Did not stop me from visiting the Gay Head cliffs in Aquinnah on the western most tip of the Vineyard… or hiking through the woods of Christiantown to visit the tiny chapel there.  (Christiantown link)

I also experimented a bit with black and white film. From top left… Edgartown harbor, Christiantown stone wall..Sengekontacket Pond and South Beach.

February 2007… bitter cold, dusting of over night snow, icy ponds and harbors… and brilliant sunsets.

My birthday is in February and sadly the only one I’ve ever spent on the Vineyard was in 1950 when my beloved godmother, Gertrude Norris passed away. But I’m not anywhere near done having birthdays so who knows what the future will bring 🙂

Weekly Challenge: Gathering …

The prompt for gathering is:  Share with us your interpretation of “gathering.” It could be your entire family decked out in ugly holiday sweaters. It could be a group of seagulls strutting down the beach. Perhaps it’s a basket of fresh herbs you’ve collected from your garden for that awesome pasta dish this evening.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My choice for the prompt, gathering is this gaggle of geese gathered in a field, a rest stop on their way south.  This was taken a couple of Decembers ago when New Jersey was having winter in December and snow on the ground, not spring in December like this year when things are starting to bloom :)
