Vanni Owns Fourth Saturday

Fourth Saturday - a wonderful busy time with knitters and spinners coming and going from the Little Red Barn.  But it was also busy in the pasture, with a steady stream of visitors coming through the gates on this sunny and windy day.

For instance, while Mia was busy filling some bags with 'paca poo for her urban homestead, her son Levi was having a great time playing ring-around-the-rosey with Vanni.

A lovely group of girls came to visit the animals and learn about spinning wool.  They loved the alpacas, but, as usual, Vanni stole the show.

A sweet young couple came to see what alpacas look like in person, but had to deal with Vanni's... uh, curious nature.

Thanks to all the Barnies who dropped by today, including our first-timer, Debbie... Denise, Rita, Lisa, Lisa, Karen, Kris, Gail, CJ, and Anela (who'd I miss?).

Hopefully next time we get together, there won't be a huge moving van in the front yard... We'll let you know when the garage sale is on.  Some of Grandma's stuff is awesome.

SRO at the LRB

Like bees to honey, we flocked to the Little Red Barn today, to spend time together, meet new friends, and knit and spin for all we were worth.  I think we set a new LRB record for the number of people who spent at least part of the day with us today!

My neighbor, Ilene, brought tomato plants for us to share - because her beds were full, and there's nothing sadder than a lovely Roma without a good home.

Gloria got comfy, and Joy brought a box full of Spin Off back issues for us to paw through...
(Gloria's mom, Linda, somehow evaded the camera...)

Maria and her amazing double knitting.  Maria has agreed to teach a class in this fascinating technique - mark down June 9 and stay tuned for the details.

Hanane has agreed to teach shuttle tatting, too.  Flag May 12 for this class, and watch for the details.

Huge thanks to Will Hulse for helping me with some gardening chores.  He has volunteered to take on the Garden Rehab project - I am so relieved and excited I could cry.  I hate to see a neglected garden, but there's only so much we can do.  Thank you, Will, for taking this on...

In addition to the tatting and double knitting classes, we'll be starting another Beginning Spinning class on Wednesday evening at 7 (three sessions from 7-9 PM, $50, all materials included).  And we're long overdue to Dye Trying - so we'll pull out the dye pots on May 19.  You guessed it - details coming.

We Have a Winner!

This morning, the winner of the Half Share of fiber from the DFW Fiber Fest came for a visit!  Melissa Rice, and her pal Sami Moss dropped by to see a little of what was in store for her as a shareholder at Jacob's Reward Farm.

Sami and Melissa greet the Menagerie
The critters did not disappoint.  The chickens, sheep, dogs and alpacas were all on their best behavior to impress their new benefactress, and the newest members of the farm family.

Vanni, of course, as the Sweetest Dog on Earth, warmed up to animal-magnet Sami and nearly knocked her down with love.

He's such a lover.  Melissa asks if he's really just 15 months old...  Uh, yep.  Still an adolescent in the LGD world.

Ruthie and Vanni then joined in a merry romp - something I haven't seen in a long time.  The cool weather and liberating hair cut have turned Ruth back into a young pup as well, and the chase was on...

Rawr.. rawr.... rawr...  The Lioness and the Clown.

All that roughhousing attracted the alpacas, who don't like missing out on potential treats.  With just plucked grass from the pasture, Sami had all the boys eating out of her hand...

I think the crew won them over.  Can't wait to have them back to the farm and the Little Red Barn for some knitting/spinning time together!  Mi granja es su granja!

Manure Magnetism

Mia and her son came out to the farm today to grab some of our very precious "Paca Gold," aka manure, for their garden back home.

Mia and I are kindred spirits - raising chickens, gardening as organically as possible, and getting lots of fresh air.

And while mom shoveled, little Levi and I did a quick walkabout in the pasture...

He was quite keen on visiting the chickens and collecting eggs.

The alpacas were their usual curious selves, as if they'd never seen one of these miniature humans before.

Thank you for coming out, friends, and please stop back by again!  Mia - I bet we could get you crocheting... it's worth a try...

We’re Shearin’ in the Rain!

Gene Kelly's got nothing on us - we got it done.  All the wool is off!  We started with the Jacobs, who were very unhappy about being penned up in their stall overnight.

Samson lost a lot of his attitude ("ramitude") once he was on his butt with four feet in the air.

Despite the weather, a really nice crowd came out to cheer Danny on... Michaela was in charge of the CDT syringes, Jake kept the fleece bags at the ready...

Israel is trying to figure out how to make a break for it, now that he's smaller and lighter without his winter jammies on.

Next we moved to the big shed in the north pasture where eight boys were waiting.  Itzhak takes his turn getting peeled of the lovely fiber, leaving his pink skin exposed to the fresh air again.

The kids were fascinated.  Heck, we all were.  Who gets tired of this?

The whirring blades and cutters glide over the sheep's skin, and the wool falls away, blow after blow.  It's like a knife through warm butter...

By the time we were finishing up with the ewes and lambs in the blue shelter, the rain began to pelt in earnest.  And still, the crowd hung with us.  It was so worth it.

The lambs' fleeces are even nicer than I expected.  The first shearing is often nicer than subsequent years, but if these little guys hold on to even half of their fineness and crimp, they will be stars in our wool flock.  What a blessed surprise they were, and continue to be.

Here's just a portion of the year's clip - I'm very, very happy with what came off our sheep this year.

I'm so grateful to this year's group of helpers!  Thank you Danny, for another job well done, Mickey, for the refreshments, Michaela and Jake for your helping hands, Mike for hauling the plywood around, and everybody, for bringing your umbrellas and enjoying the show in the rain!  I'm going to take just a day or so and enjoy the fact that the job is done, but then, it's time to start WASHING WOOL!
